Default Rear diff oil on WH Quadra Drive

Hi guys,

My rear diff cover plate is leaking, so I'll be replacing the gasket soon.

Is there a specific oil I should use in the QDII diff?

Cheers,

Robert

I have been useing Castrol SYNTRAX 80-140 & Nulon Full Synthetic 80W-140 Heavy Duty Limited Slip Differential Oil without issue. Both already have the friction modifier in it.

I've been using Penrite Pro Gear 80W-140 full-synthetic with no issues.
Any high-quality fully synthetic gear oil labeled for LSD diffs (already has friction modifiers for pre-loaded clutch pack type LSDs.) should be fine.

You'll find reports on the internets about too little friction modifier resulting in chattering when turning, or too much modifier resulting in slippage. Most of that is regarding the QD1 diffs, sometimes just recanted for QD2 without evidence.

The QD2 diff is effectively an open diff under normal conditions, there's no preload (or very little.) on the clutch pack, so you wont get the same chattering as with a spring-preloaded LSD. When "locked" the preload is much higher than a normal LSD, so noticeable slippage due to a small increase or difference in friction modifiers is unlikely. You just want some friction modifiers to protect from trashing the friction material.

I use Redline 75W-140 with FM included, around $100 a gallon. Awesome product.

Download from the App Store the Penrite Netlube application for your smart phone.
Handy thing to have...

Need to be careful with listings like that though. The Netlube app (just for example.) has listed inappropriate oils for the 5.7 hemi, the 545rfe trans and NV245 transfer case in the past. Updated after I (and I'm sure a few other people.) informed them via a trade account.

Not really a technical/engineering issue, just administrative, such as having incorrect manufacturer data about some vehicles. Which is more difficult for them to detect or fix. So still best to double-check things via a forum or site like wkjeeps.com.
