Default Mud flaps for towing: Rock Tamers

Hate them or hate them, we have to have mud flaps.

So out with the jigsaw, and I have cut down the stock flaps by 130mm.
That should stop them ripping off on most tracks around SA I hope.
Maybe Jambo will be a different story...

Then I went the entirely opposite direction and installed my Rock Tamers that turned up on the doorstep yesterday.

The Rock Tamers came from http://www.cabelas.com
and cost me $320 AUD Delivered in approx one week.

Local price at 4x4 camping show (show special) = $430 AUD
RRP at http://www.rocktamers.com.au/ = $485 AUD (!)

Yes, they are expensive, for sure, but they are nicely built, seem quite heavy duty and the rubber flaps themselves are heavy and huge.

I am pretty happy with them.
They look long in the photos, but I have bigger tyres in the shed, and a lift kit on order with ARB. So that will raise the flaps up a bit off the dirt.
The manufacturer recommends 3 to 4 inches off the ground when your trailer is hitched up.

It's to protect my back window for when towing on dirt roads.
After reading and reading all over the net about different options from Conveyor belt rubber, to VB cartons taped to the back window, I think this will be the best and survive long enough to be moved from vehicle to vehicle.

The quickest way to remove them is to just pull the whole hitch assembly out.

I also considered the Terraflex quick release mud flaps, but for what you get, by the time it had arrived, It didn't seem worth it.

Plus the flaps that came with them seemed too small, and so I would still have to fork out extra money to buy flaps, or pieces of rubber from somewhere.

With the jigsaw I also cut off 70mm of exhaust pipe.

Rock Tamers instructions says you should have a distance of between 8 and 10 inches from tailpipe to Mud flap.

JKohn has them too - His solution was to have the tailpipe modified to come out the side.

If you are a DIYer Ovesco have a good range of rubber flaps at even better prices.
