Once had a fault in a Ford, took a chance on it being the MAP sensor or something like that, went to a mates place as he had same model, once I had calmed him down and swapped the part mine ran good again and his played up, he was pale so I swapped it back and he had a smile then went to Repco for a new part and saved heaps of $$ compared to the genuine part which by the way came in the same plain box and label.
It's been doing this for well over a year now with no obvious detriment. Might just leave it for now.

Btw, the Jeep dealer says I have a timing cover leak and quoted $2.5k to fix it. Is that right in terms of cost? I haven't noticed any oil drips on the garage floor. The same dealer said I needed a new upper sump gasket as a matter of urgency. That was five years ago, still no obvious leaks on the floor and funnily enough, the dealer did not raise this issue in any subsequent service over the following 5 years.

Change workshops...dont use a Dealership...use a decent diesel mechanic...Dealerships charge around 30-50% more per hour for the use of their pre-pubescent 1st year apprentices....get a REAL mechanic to look at it....ask the forum members for advise on which workshop near you supplies a good service.....Dealerships suck....brand on the flagpole outside makes no difference to what lies behind the workshop door....all shyte

Best to pull the GP's and test both resistance of the plug as sounds like the plug is faulty. Then test voltage to wiring. Fluctuations should be noticeable.

I would get away from that dealership, they will damage more than they fix. I would check torque on timing case and sump/upper sump bolts. I have had a few seepages and after checking a number of them were under torque and not tight at all.

Also found one of my timing cover bolts missing! This was a new engine put in by a dealer (under insurance), worse thing I ever did! They were shocking and the repairs I have undertaken since have been numerous. Luckily have been able to do them myself.

I love having no leaks!

Move away from a dealership, they work on a time frame for each job, thats where most problems seem to come from, find a good workshop and your vehicle will last many years............ agree with @Jimmy777 you need to check each glow plug and connections, get yourself a manual and it shows what the parameters are, the quicky test being what I said before swap the suss one and see.

I have looked and tried several independents in the 10 years I've owned the Jeep. Perhaps it is the small Perth market but I never found one that is either less worse than the dealer (in fact a couple of them would have left me thousands out of pocket with misdiagnosis), or less cost than the dealer or reasonably close (ie one of the ones recommended would have entailed me having to take half to one day off work and very little transport options if I did not want to hang around the workshop all day. The other recommended independent is more of a home workshop and reasonably close by but difficult to make contact, never returns phone calls or email and the one time he did, seemed disinterested even for a simple service.

Another independent I took the Jeep was to replace the radiator. They quoted $650 which was quite good. However, it took them nearly two days to do the job. When I picked up the car they apologised saying they normally don't get Jeeps and they didn't realise what a hassle it was to replace the radiator. They kept to their quote but suggested that next time I should take the car to a dealer or someone that has more intimate knowledge of the vehicle - I gave them 5 stars for honesty!

Another example is the axle winding issue I had a year or so ago. The independent I saw for a while (that say they specialise in Jeeps and german vehicles) said that my transfer box is stuffed and quoted $6.5K to fix it. I suspected that was not right so I took it to a transmission specialist. They correctly said it is an electronics issue rather than mechanical but did not have the specialised equipment to diagnose it. They sent me to a highly regarded auto electrical specialist who diagnosed it as a faulty sensor unit. However they then told be to take it back to the dealer for fitting as the new one would need to be programmed back into the vehicle and they don't have the equipment to do it. Then the dealer (well spare parts) told me that the unit is plug and play, and so it was. You see how much time and stuffing around there was just to diagnose an electronic fault? I would have liked the transmission people (or event the auto electrical people) to service my car from there on but they don't do that. I always end up back at the dealer!

The reality is that the Jeep is the most trouble free car I've ever owned but I always have a feeling that something major is just around the corner. But the issue for me, in Perth anyway, is finding a workshop that knows enough about Jeeps.

I feel your pain and thanx for the history.
As a heads up...when you have an issue you can always ring All Grand Cherokee and the main man will give you a diagnosis over the phone...a very very handy thing for me living relatively remote....there are three other shops that rate highly and may be able to 'narrow it down' without putting eyes/hands on it....Jeeps'r'Us....GDL Auto and 7-Slot....I havent personally dealt with those 3 but the recommendations are outstanding....There's also a shop in Adelaide....BJ Auto that specialises in Jeep n Euro....havent dealt with them but those that have have only had good things to say.....GOOD LUCK

Im in the suburbs north of Perth and feel your pain.
I thought id found a good diesel mechanic locally at a Automasters store and used them for a while, was all good until they tried to rip me off by telling me things had been done and they hadnt so im on the lookout as well.
Ive heard Jeep Worx in Malaga are good, Jeep Wangara parts guys are great, very knowledgeable and helpful but trying to find honest decent serving is getting hard.
I recently got my turbo coolant hose and other hoses done, had quotes from $1,500 to $3,000 from various places.
All for the same job!!!
