OUCH!!! Hate to hear that!

He'll have to do what my father used to (he also lost part of a digit) whenever some one asked what happened..."Picking my nose and a big booger ate it!"

If you have more than 4 - 4.5" of down travel over stock the TRE will bind as run out of travel. You need a OTK setup if more than that.

The scars on both the tie rod and the axle tubes tell the story how it bent

Very very common with Jeeps driven hard all of the comp rigs that I know have suffered this at least once

solution is a hi steer setup but that creates engineering issues and is a lot of work. I have seen the flexy tie rods work well in this situation but they do have a limit and will eventually bend and not bend back.

You can put on even tougher tie rods but remember the forces will be transfered to the next weakest point that is very hard /expensive to fix and will leave you stranded at least a tie rod you can bash straight and reinforce with a hi lift jack handle to get you home.

BTW sorry to hear about your mates finger and that is a great reminder for all of us to stay alert and think about our actions out driving
