Cool looking for a jeep

G'Day guys

Im crossing over from the dark side, have been a toyota and nissan driver all my life.

now times have changed and i need a offroad rig that the Mrs can drive "bit more tame from my other offroad abominations" lol.

Im looking at a cherokee ZG for the simple fact that it has a auto transmission "the mrs again" and coils on all four.

parts seem to be everywhere for these so seems to be a good choice.

Anything i should look for as a warning sign when hunting? and do the ZG's have any mechanical problems i should be worried about?

Any tips or hints would be appreciated as jeep are a whole new kettle of fish.

Cheers
Dan

Look for a good XJ instead.
Better vehicle on most fronts.

Thanks for the reply but can you elaborate on this or are you a XJ owner? lol.

I looked at the XJ and like the look of them better but find the leaf rear suspension to be a big limitation in offroad flex.

Is there a big mechanical differance between the models or is one truck weaker in the driveline ect than the other.

Thanks
Dan

The leaves on the XJ flex well. And if you want it to flex better there are aftermarket options. Most owners on this forum have rear lift but are happy with the rest on the rear. You could use something like a JKS crossover if you want more.

From that point it is more about which vehicle you prefer - I don't think the leaf rear is a limiting factor though.

Driven both, still prefer my ZG. It's a beast offroad.

Have driven both - I prefer my XJ
No crappy CV's in the XJ axles or tailshafts.
Much better part-time/fulltime t/case.
WAY more aftermarket parts.
Many cheaper replacement parts.
Headlights don't fall out

If you plan on building it up the XJ is a better bet, if you build up a ZJ you'll end up with an XJ transfercase, front driveshaft, possibly front diff if you want to get rid of the CV's, basically the ZJ bits will get replaced with XJ bits

Cheers
Steve
