It's not so much that the car is underpowered - it has enough grunt for a 4WD. What your mechanic may have meant is that the engine itself is underpowered, considering it's size (and thirst).
BTW: the diesel has even less power. You may not feel it though, as it more than makes up for it with torque.
The Superchips Flashpaq engine tuner adds about 10% more power and torque to the pertol unit. There are also equivalent diesel boosters, but I have no data on the performance gains.

If you want a petrol V6 buy it and then get yourself the Superchip Flashpaq; running 33's on mine and tuned it with the programmer and there is heaps of power and better fuel economy too boot...

At @ 225 hp now up from 205 hp certainly not under powered.

If you don’t buy the diesel.

The CRD is IMHO the better engine of the two for Highway stuff and offroad.

But I drove the Petrol when I test drove my JK way back and I had no complaints...................... if you think it's underpowered, I would personally prefer engines to be engineered on the conservative side if it's going to get me some more life out of it!

I think you should consider getting yourself a new mechanic as he clearly has no idea what he's talking about
Both the petrol & diesel JK's have excellent power to weight.
