Default WG Grand Cherokee cooling system questions

Hi there,

Recently my jeep has started overheating when its under load and it has been driven for a while and when checking out the cooling system i've noticed someone has actually added a secondary electric water pump to car's cooling system.

Yes, the car has 2 water pumps for cooling installed in the one system, now when roadside assistance came out to try and see if they could solve the problem they said that there was no power two the secondary water pump/that he reckons that it is not working.

Now if that is correct and the secondary pump is not working in the system do you think that'll be enough to reduce/stop the water flow and be the cause of the over heating issue?

When i looked around i did not find any loose hoses or see and visible hose leaks or leaks in the radiator itself.

Hmm, it’s not all that uncommon to use an electric pump, if you pull the engine pump you may find it’s been gutted and they’ve used the electric as an alternative. So yes, it would affect your ability to cool. Add 12V direct to the pump leads to see if the pump itself is working, if it is the relay that powers it, or the thermostat that activates it has probably failed. Even if the engine pump is functional, the non-functional electric one would interfere with the flow so yes, you will need to sort the electric pump out

A dud water pump in the system would certainly restrict the flow.

I recall reading somewhere (probably in the XJ overheating sticky) that having faster flowing coolant doesn't do much to cool it down as the coolant doesn't stay in the radiator long enough.

Maybe the radiator is blocked and needs a good flush or replacement.

There should be a fuse feeding the second pump, maybe you have just blown the fuse.

The electric pumped has been removed from the system entirely as they claimed it has seized up, still has the engine heating problem even after replacing the original oem water pump to a new one, spoke to the shop before they were closing and they are now in the process checking out the thermostat to see if there is a potential issue there with it sticking in the open or closed position/ if it is responding at all.....

How old is the radiator? She's likely shagged.
