Default Look for Diff specialist recommendations - Vic

Looking to regear my Sport to 4.88 and the quote I got so far was quite shocking. $1800 just in labour...

I'm looking at $1500 in parts for the ring, pinion, master install kits and carrier for the Dana 30. What's the best I can hope for with labour for drop off and drive away?

Have seen too many "F" ups from "one shop fixes all".... Diffs in 4WD's can be used HARD so need all the TLC they can get.
IMHO go to a real diff specialist not just a 4WD "workshop". If they build custom diffs ( i.e build from scratch / make & machine parts ) then there's a good bet they really know what they are on about.

They will be a few bucks dearer than the bloke who 'can chuck that together for ya..." but you'll get a quality job, which will pay off down the track. Take the time to call in have a chat and a look around.... you'll soon figure out who the experts are.

A dead give away of the "she'll be right diff place" is the use of shim stacks ( a collection of whatever was around.... ) to get the clearances required. A professional will grind a SINGLE shim to the right size for each side - exactly as the diff comes from Dana.

I spoke to a guy in Thomastown who was very knowledgeable. He essentially talked me out of doing the regear due to the costs involved and inherent limitations of a JK Sport. He spoke about how a lot of the gearsets are cheap crap out of China and to stick with a good brand. Was very happy to get his advice but I was just curious as to whether his labour costs were accurate or high.

Given the ~3-3500 price tag I think I'll stick with 33s and live with the stupid 3.21 gearing. I mean what the ******** were Jeep thinking?

$3500 would go a long way to a rubicon upgrade....
