I'm going braided soon as I can afford them. Better calipers are the go yes DW but the cost is huge to upgrade them. IMHO I would rather carry a spare set of braid lines than a spare rubber one, which are often too short under full droop if the lines are stock. I do see the validity of your point but I think the chances of hooking a line up should be pretty slim. Unless of course something was unseen which for me these days I don't take risks if I can't see what's below.

Why better (and expensive) calipers?

Have in mind that even the youngest XJ has already an age of more than 10 years.
Aftermarket availability of slotted and/or drilled rotors and better brake pads with a higher friction makes it easy to upgrade with a fraction of the costs.
Will it remove spongyness? No
Do we race the track? No
So does it matter? No

DW, Drilled/slotted rotors are a pain when they fill up with mud.
I believe SS braid came from dragsters & fire rating requirements. You dont see SS braid on other off road equipment. Probably as its not good from a stress cracking view point.
Standard hose material is fine. Good brake places can make them any length you want.

Never had any trouble with the slotted rotors- even in mud.

Maybe the environment in australia is different. The european forest do have a lot wood on their fireroads. Risk of damage is constantly given.

I have slotted on mine deliberately, kept away from drilled cause of problems with mud getting in the holes.

IIRC SS braided lines were stock on H1 Hummers.....

Some blokes upgarde the calipers to BA Ford ones. The cost is heaps as you need to buy a knuckle adapter kit, and calipers. I apparently upgraded my pads when I went to EBC?? But I found they fade under heat. Might have been different if I went Greens but I went Ultimax. I found that Bendix 4WD pads have performed the best so far. My brakes are pretty good so not complaining but I would like just a little more efficiency hence why I will be going with SS lines at some point.
