Recommended Shockers & Leaf Springs?
Hi,
This is my first post after lurking for a couple of weeks. I recently bought a 2000 XJ Classic with soft, wobbly suspension. I took it into Pedders for the 28 poiny safety check. I was fearing the worst but actually got what I thought was an honest assessment of work needed.
They recommend replacement of the 4 shocks ($181 each) and possible replacement or re-setting of both leaf springs ($235 each for replacements). Including labour the all up cost is just over $1500. If I go for resetting of the leaf springs I can save approx $250.
Just wondering if those of you with experience think this pricing is OK, or should I be looking and buying the parts myself and just having a local mechanic fit them? If I go this route, what products are known to be good on the XJ?
Please note I want to keep it stock so not after any lift kits or anything.
Thanks,
Mark

I wouldn't be spending money on resetting springs, they will just sag again.
Before you buy shop around. Try wooders, and 4wd1. $1200 should get you a 2 inch lift shipped to your door. I know you want stock, but stock rear springs on the xj aren't to crash hot.

Thanks for your opinions but do you have any recommendations as to actual products that are known to be good?
I also don't want any lift above stock as I hear this creates all sorts of castor issues and will bring on the death wobbles. I just want the Jeep to be like it was when new.
Thanks,
Mark

If I where you I would ring wooder's, Dave drives an xj and only sells the best products it would be a lot better to talk to him and tell him what you want

What you've heard is nothing short of rubbish, to be frank.
I have fitted an ARB OME 2" lift kit all round on my 2001 XJ Classic. It rides, handles and steers better than it did originally. You do know that many XJs came from the factory with a 1" lift anyway (XJ Sports). 2" lift (more like 1.5 - 1.75") is nothing much more. In fact without the coil spacers and the stiffened rear leaves, the ARB kit would be very close to the factory 1" lift.
I can highly recommend the ARB OME kit.

yes agree with rubbish u are being told utter crap and give wooders a call or one of the other vendors on the site i run rubicon express shocks which are for a 4.5 inch lift and are cheaper than price u got quoted im very happy with them .im sure they come in shorter lengths, ive owned my jeep from new and factory suspension is not as good as quality after market by a long shot.
