I guess we should apply a similar factor to other claims in this & other posts.
If your K&N filters are so good, the engine manufactures would be happy to see people fit them.
My own experience includes having a tech rep for K&N filters show up when I had a rep from CAT at home. The K&N guy basically forgot how to speak English when he worked out who he was talking to. I have about a dozen diesels in various applications & given what I have been made aware of, I would not go near a K&N. I am also aware of 2 large transport operators, both with more than 30 prime movers that also would not go near K&N.
An oil moist filter element will become very dirty looking very quick with soot. Its the abrasive particles that dont show as black gunk on the filter that cause problems. Your oil change interval probably has more to do with the type of driving you do, not the air filter you use.
If the major diesel engine manufacturers dont like K&N filters, why would anyone seriously consider using them?
Much of your sprooking for K&N sounds a bit like piglet on a certain brand of accessories.

I have done my research and the condition I live and drive I wouldn't go near a K&N filter each to there own I guess.
All I'm chasing is the simple fact that the standard filter element is shagged and need replacing not wanting to go to the stealership and pay my left nut for a new one was hoping I could get some options on aftermarket ones

Cheers Chingy

I took an airfilter element out of my jeep into superjunk & spent about 1/2 hr compairing it with every element in stock. I found one that was about 3mm larger in each dimension that was for some rice burner ~ $12. Its been in the jeep for about 40,000km now. Found a nos one on ebay for next to nix. Thats going in next. I blow mine out every few weeks because of the environment it spends some of the time in.

I zeroed my odometer B odometer as I drove down past Avenel so I could refuel with caltex diesel on my return trip I get more k,s using the vortex premium diesel

My distance till empty gauge said 350 k,s till empty and as I have a wife that goes psychotic if I let the distance till empty gauge go under 100 till empty
I wanted to calculate being able to get to Avenel for refuelling on the way home and have a meal total amount travelled to get back to avenel from when I drove past 180,k,s give or take a couple K,s

As for spruiking about K&N filters I have had other brands as well so am not brand loyal
With my old Mercedes I made my own using high density closed cell oil resistant foam which I bought from Clark rubber
The Mercedes had a frame which made making an air filter easy I did 850,000 k,s on the merc before it burned a valve and that was due to the switch over from leaded to unleaded fuel and my partner filled it with unleaded

The Jeep does not have a frame so I bought A K&N from the states 60$ including shipping having done 80,000k,s since October last year and changing the filter every 15,000k,s I would have gone through 5 disposable filters already and be on my 6th by now so the K&N has paid for its self
Factory filters probably do a better job its debatable there are many pluses and minuses against factory and K&N simply put I just clean it and use it again I would buy another for the next vehicle I buy but that wont be till this Jeep see,s a million k,s or blows up Ill see which one comes first

As for trucks and earth movers I cant say I don't own one have never owned one have a few mates that drive them so cant make that decision but when you are changing your oil on a Sunday and the air filter is dirty its not just Ill go down to the local auto parts store and get one they usually say we have to order it in for the Jeep so cleaning and re oiling it there and then makes it an easy choice

Like I said ill tell you when its done a million k,s

You are better of getting rid of the egr system and stopping the crankcase oil vapours getting into your engine than worrying about air filters they will kill an OM642 engine before a K&N filter will

Tend to agree with Doc to a certain extent.
I am no mechanic, but do know that all engines rely on fuel and air. In my way of thinking, the better the air flow, the more efficient the engines going to be.
The Youtube demonstration in bodgie's post does not reflect actual on road conditions and airflow.
As Doc mentioned, spend your $ on EGR blanking and a Provent 200 if you are really concerned about engine longevity.

I have had K&N filters on older vehicles, but not too sure about using them on modern day engines because of the air flow sensors etc, which is why I have gone for a AFE filter. It's due to arrive this week, so time will tell.

Not suggesting that I am right and others are wrong, just trying to think practically and outside the square.

Cheers, Craig

Are the big earthmoving/transport diesel filters made out of similar paper material ot the factory car filters. There is a filter wash business next to where I'm working and I'm intrigued as to how they go about washing them.

Can everyone that has a 3.0ltr CRD point me in the right direction.

Thanks clarky,

I was waiting for Cherokee30D to get back to me once his arrived in the mail he said you were running one.
I'm not really into the who's right who's wrong I have researched this filter and am happy with it just wasn't sure if it fit as it say 11"3"14" or something.....
If you are running it mate that's good enough for me

Cheers

Chingy
