Would this work as a preventative? Can we assume if our alternator has lasted for the last 3 years, a new one would give us another 3 under the same conditions?

If this is the case why isn't FCA doing this for the current recalls, instead of waiting for them to fail putting people in danger?

Not sure what brand these are but they might be worth a look:

If the alternator recall applies to your car (petrol) surely you're entitled to get it done before it fails? No recall yet on the diesel. The other problem is, there are no genuine replacements available, about 4-6 weeks on back order one dealer just told me.

Thought i would add to this,I own a MY2014 GC Diesel, driving home on christmas eve the radio stopped working. Tried turning the volume back up but would go straight back to zero. Next a battery voltage warning came up, all non essential systems started shutting down one by one, crash avoidance, abs etc. Changed the screen to display the voltage and when it got to about 8 volts lost power steering. Trust me these things are heavy to steer without it. If the wife was driving it would have been a very different outcome!! Amazingly made it home and as i pulled into the garage the engine coughed just before i shut it down. Got it too the dealer on the 2nd of January they diagnosed it and ordered a new alternator. On the 14th they had still not even picked the alternator from a warehouse in Melbourne. Had rang another dealership parts department and told me there were 62 in stock and was about $300 cheaper than what was quoted by service department. The new alternator finally arrived on the 18th and now have the car back.

What was the voltage when you first got it displayed on the EVIC?
