Default Advice on Trailer light Problem.

On my caravan brake lights and indicators are working, but tail lights and side lights are not working.

The auto sparky says it is because the incandescent lights on the caravan are overloading the system on the Jeep also stopping the left tail light working.

He suggests a $1200 upgrade to LED lights on the van. I have looked, I can source the lights and fit them myself for about $400.

Has anyone come across this before?

All the lights work on my heavy duty 10x5 tandem trailer but they are LED.

When I plug the van into my KK Cherokee (which now belongs to my son) all the lights work as they should.

I had the same problem with tail lights and the stop lights. Just put a relay in. I used the power from the andersen plug to power the lights and the original wiring to trigger the relays. The stop lights were ok at first, would be ok for a few days and then stopped working halfway through the next day. turning the motor off and restarting would fix it for a while. The override on the brake controller still worked.

I had same, Jeep parkers had a spazzo and van side lights wouldn't work properly, I just bought a heap of leds on Ebay and fitted them, think I needed a dozen so bought 18, couple of duds but at about $1 each way better than 6 or 8 bucks a pop, few years now and all still working, just need to ID the globe type and your good to go.... Depending on the side lights you may need to fiddle around with one to figure out how they come apart, some will just pop open some need a twist, replacing the whole assembly can be expensive.

I agree, told him I couldn’t justify spending that. It included running a complete new set of wiring.

You just replaced the bulbs with led bulbs?

I see plenty on eBay, I will pop the bulbs out this weekend and buy some. Certainly worth a try before replacing the complete lights.

Check this page out for name of fitting, auto bayonet or auto wedge, compare height of led to the bulb as sometimes the led may be bigger and not fit in the lamp cavity..... My van used T10's.
