I eventually got around to checking the forum last night and found I am no orphan.

Called dealer 10 o'clock this morning and told them of info from this forum. They agreed to investigate. Called back in a few minutes and told me to bring vehicle in. Mechanic cleared the fault 3 times as instructed - less than 15 minutes. I engaged and disengaged low range 4 times on the way home - problem seems to have gone away. 50 minutes from first phone call and I am posting on the forum. I hope the rest of my day goes as well!

Thanks everyone for your posts - the info saved me pulling my Jeep to bits.

Cheers,
Rolf
Welcome to the party

If you loose 4low again & need it with the ignition in the run position (engine off) disconnect the plug from the actuator (transfer case motor on the left hand side if the T/Case) and then hook it back up, this will rest the module and put the DTC warning into a stored state and low will work again.

Only takes a minute, this was told to me by a Jeep tech & yes I have done it.

How? Did that involve a new, pre-update, FDCM swap. If so where can you pick one up. Mine still going strong after the last re-flash though still only early days.

Cheers

Just swapped it out with a pre-update one from a wrecker, mine actually came out of a hemi (this one ) http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141192626...84.m1423.l2649 just sent them an email & asked how long the jeep had been there.

Here is one on eBay, price is about the same as I paid even though its from Lithuania

I listed compatible part numbers in an earlier post

Default Third Time Lucky.....

Ok, so I had the 'Service 4WD System' and no 4Low looked at this morning. Third time now.
Here is what is written on their report: -
Check and report on Service four wheel drive system on dash.
Checked and found concern evident, found stored code for transfer case brake performance - C1406. Carried out diagnosis for stored code and could not replicate concern. Checked for intermittent wiring concern, clear DTC, road test and engage 4x4 low several times and found all OK.

The service guy mentioned that there may be a problem with the transfer case and that it may have to be replaced at one stage.
He is either full of knowledge or full of BS........

Cheers, Craig

I vote BS

"a problem with the transfer case" suggests a mechanical "problem" aka a failure. Mechanical failures tend to be fairly consistent .

C1406 is not one of the codes that is said to show up after the flash, C140F (Erratic Encoder Performance Fault) and a C1405 fault (T-case range position sensor circuit high fault) are.

Below is the manuals Possible Causes.

C1406 Possible Causes
Quote:
INTERMITTENT TRANSFER CASE BRAKE PERFORMANCE
(T317) TRANSFER CASE MOTOR LOCK SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
(T317) TRANSFER CASE MOTOR LOCK SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
(T301) SWITCHED BATTERY SOLENOID SUPPLY CIRCUIT OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE
TRANSFER CASE MOTOR ASSEMBLY
FINAL DRIVE CONTROL MODULE
C1405 Possible Causes
Quote:
INTERMITTENT TRANSFER CASE RANGE POSITION SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH
(K504) DRIVETRAIN 5 VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
(T313) MODE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO VOLTAGE
(T313) MODE SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN
(K594) DRIVETRAIN SENSOR RETURN CIRCUIT OPEN
TRANSFER CASE MOTOR
FINAL DRIVE CONTROL MODULE
Notice any similarity's

If a replacement FDCM ( pre-update) takes away the code the circumstantial evidence would be overwhelming

I wonder if the programing from a pre N23 could be saved with a starscan & then be put back on an post updated FDCM?
