Kakadu - June 2015

Going to head off from Port Douglas for a 4 week trip to Kakadu via Savannah Way incl Roper Bar, departing on June 1st. Any other Jeep owners heading out that way? We are fairly-well up-to-date with planning but any tips are appreciated. JKU Rubicon towing off-road fwd folding camper.

Dont know much about the in between, but lived in kakadu for a year so happy to provide some information/ideas re kakadu itself if that helps

Thanks Fathead. I've read up on what to see & do in Kakadu so I think we have that sorted. Probably more wanting to know the better campgrounds to stay at. We'll have around 7 days in Kakadu, don't need to cram all the attractions into a few days so thinking of spending 3-4 nights up the top then 3-4 nights around the southern part - would like to base ourselves each time somewhere nice. If you or anyone else are able to pass on any knowledge that would be gold..always good to hear any local's tips!

kakadu is a great place and if your into fishing take a rod and lures and make sure you visit cahills crossing. cahills is the vehicle access between kakadu and arnhemland and it works a bit like a dam and barrier when the tide come in. at that time of year there should be lots of small barra, but if you can fish the downsteam of cahills about an hour before the water crosses over you may have a change of monster. PS what out for crocs. they will see you but you ont see them and they are big and everywhere

Gunlom (used to be called UDP falls) is a great campsite. green grass type site with hot showers and flushing toilets. not sure about power. its also only a nice short walk to the bottom main pool. but i would suggest that you follow the path and go to the top pools. the hike is well work it. about half way into gunlom is motorcar falls. its one of my favorite places. if you plan to visit motorcar falls, park int he tour guide parking bay (2nd on the right when you are driving IN). this will cut about half hour off the walk

cooinda (yellow waters) has nice camp grounds and fuel and there are places to stay (camp/power/caravan etc) in jabiru itself. jabiru is a good base as most of the northern stuff (ubir, noralangi rocks, coodinda, maguk (barramundi gorge) is between 40-60km form their.

you can do twin falls and jim jim falls in a day trip from jabiru or cooinda, but its a long day. when we were last at twin falls it only had long drops and and no power. also there are no camping facilities at jim jim (but there not that far from each other)

Good stuff mate. All sounds good. I'm hoping to catch a Barra so definitely will have my gear. Campgrounds you mention sound good too. No worries about power as long as the sun is shining we're self sufficient.

Going to take notes on camping sites on the way there and back along the Savannah Way for our future reference and anyone else on here that might be interested.
