Default MY08 CRD exhaust replacement ?

Apologies if this topic has been done to death elsewhere but I wondered if someone has been this route before and any advice forthcoming. My daily driver...has come back from its 190k service with a clean bill of health other than needing a new complete exhaust system. The pipe is completely cracked through about an inch or two back from where it bolts to the turbo. I've also loosened a baffle in the muffler but that clearly isnt the main issue. Full systems seem to be thin on the ground and O.E. typically priced so high in Australia that no one is likely to order one ...ever. I believe this crack has been there for some time and certainly for at least 1-2 thousand kms. Most are recommending stainless and the systems seem to start at $1200 and climb pretty dramatically from there. That translates into expensive to very expensive on my budget. Anyone had experience here ? Without a chip did the fuel economy improve... any performance gain ( 3" system/ high flow cat ) or was the engine more responsive ?

A decent exhaust mob should be able to knock out a nice 2.5" with no mufflers for well under $500 in mild steel (and still be quite). Then in another 10 years, if you need to do it again you are still better off than spending $1200 now. Unless you actually get some benefits from going to a 3".

I have the factory system, rear muffler removed, 15" hotdog and a custom dump pipe. I didn't notice any power/fuel economy changes until I changed the dump pipe, dropped my highway usage by around 1ltr/100.

Sounds like your dump pipe is cracked. That can be costly to get custom made.

However Genie have a dump pipe (and complete 3" stainless steel system) off the shelf. Just contact your local Genie and get the price from them.

From memory last I heard the price was around $300 plus shipping.

Their dump pipe is decent as well as it is 3" (is 2.75" at the turbo then immediately expands to 3"), has a pyro bung ready for a EGT gauge if you want to mount one, and has a hiflo cat converter. No way you can get one custom built like that for less than $1k.

Or you can buy the entire system from Genie for about $1,200 which includes the dump pipe. I was originally just going to buy the dump pipe for mine and just chop the rear muffler out to keep it all within budget but then at the Perth 4wd Show a couple years back Genie had a special on and I got the whole system for $800, so was pretty happy with that. Maybe your local 4wd Show is coming up and you can get a similar deal?

Thanks for the feedback as its certainly appreciated. The Genie system is the one being offered to me at the moment and it looks to be around the $1200 mark. Once I've got a new dump pipe and a new muffler and probably new cat. conv. ... I'm guessing I'd be close to the same dollars. I wasnt specifically chasing stainless but they appear to be the ones flooding the net at present. Turismo07... I take it you've been satisfied with the system then ? Did you find it ran any better with the Genie system installed ? I wasnt planning on chipping the car as well so it will just be the exhaust system. Would sooner be spending the money elsewhere though.

I am happy with the full Genie system. It is not the highest quality stainless steel so doesn't have the shine that most stainless exhaust have but that doesn't bother me. The dump pipe is heat coated, but this is mostly worn off after 2 years, again not really bothered by it.

Sound quality is subjective, but doesn't drone or anything and is still much quieter than the actual engine noise.

Performance wise, I have no idea as I had it dyno tuned at the same time...

What I do know is that most CRD owners end up chopping the rear muffler (the only muffler) off their JKs with no real increase in exhust volume, but they all report an increase in throttle response. So improving the exhaust further by opening up the dump pipe with a fre'er flowing unit and hi flow cat must also improve response.

If I didn't get the Genie system for cheap, what I would have done is Genie dump pipe and removed rear muffler and be done with it. Cheapest way to improve performance and get a EGT bung at the same time.

Thanks again. I'm about to place an order for the Genie system but now been given the curved ball of 'does it have a dpf' ? as the Genie system has non. More research suggests the canister sitting just below the turbo on the MY08 JK is a catalytic convertor ..but depending on who one wishes to run with...some believe it to be a DPF. My question I guess is... what year is your JK... Did it have the ?? cylinder just below the turbo... and did its removal cause any problems or error codes . I'm guessing not but I'd like to be more confident about the next step.
thanks in advance

Only 2010+ JK CRD's have a DPF. The large canister thing you're looking at is just a GIANT catalytic converter in the stock dump pipe.

Just to answer your question, mine is a 2009. No issues whatsoever after the Genie system was installed.
