Hmm seems mileage for the V8 is 20-25lt/100kms city and 14-15lt/100kms highway.
Based on my current running costs, that's probably an extra $500 to $750 per year.
Hmmm...

A new high pressure pump on a CRD is at least $700, new injectors are at least $500. Troubleshooting a CRD is a PITA on occasion, hard to put a price on this if you do your work yourself.
My point is replacement parts if you need them (you probably will) will buy a shed load of petrol.
Buy a CRD with your eyes open, when they have problems they are not for the faint of heart.

Jason

I own a WJ/WG GC with the 2.7 CRD Merc engine and transmission and tow a 17ft single axle caravan. Average fuel use is around 12 litres/100kms in hilly country.
Caravan weighs around 1900 k's and the Jeep tows it with ease.

And that is $500 each, DIY fitment.
So the fuel use for the V8 is $500 a year dearer. Lets put that into perspective given a good CRD can easily cost a minimum of $5k more than a V8. So that's about 10 years payback on fuel costs alone. Throw in the servicing issue and things get even more cloudy.
Mind you I love diesels and loved my CRD WG. Haven't owned a petrol vehicle at all for several years now with the last 4 purchases being diesel. However I've long been of the opinion of Jason, I will never again purchase an aged CRD and definitely not one without factory warranty. We have a Mitsubishi Challenger now 2 yo that we purchased new with a 5/10 year drivetrain warranty and I will not own it past the 5 year standard warranty. The only old diesel I will hopefully own forever and consider a long term keeper is my old 4.2 TD Patrol dinosaur. A modern CRD is not a long term keeper.

While my old CRD was a good unit, I actually feel a weight off my shoulders now that I have parked it at the dealers and drove my Colorado home, I have had a feeling that something was going to happen, 260,000km without a major ???
And this new vehicle I can read the Tranny temp on the dash and that really makes me happy and no special bloody price inflated oils, I'm really starting to like this truck and I've only had it hours.
