don't the new speakers come with a grill ?
i'd mail you some mdf rings, but i'm not sure how they would survive shipping.
spacer thickness to get from metal to just under the carpet on the door panel is ~10mm.

Yeah but the grill doesnt cover the hole left by the stock rectange plastic ones Ive taken off. $325AUD for front speakers I dont want them to look crap. As I need to mount the spacer directly to metal I've decided to cut the stock plastic grill so that the two sides are still attached to the door and flush with the new speakers. I could make my own spacers and cover them but it's a lot of messing about - maybe another day.

I'm looking at the post-facelift model, so the speakers are round.
In Jeep tradition, the molded grille doesn't line up with the hole in the metal panel behind, so I'm looking to just drop a replacement speaker behind the plastic.
Checked last night; the 5.25 splits I had hoped to use don't clear the window when it's down; need to find something shallower.
Breyten - where did you mount the tweeters? any chance of posting a couple of pics ?

If you want a drop in speaker with more bass and quality sound than the stocks, use Polk 5.25's like I have all around. Bigger does not always mean better sound. The Polk speakers are well know in the USA market but just bought mine from JB HIFI many years ago and still going strong.

thats why i run Rockford fosgates. 5.25 splits and sound awsome. Also if you are wanting to spend 200-230 for a decent set of drop in splits alpine do them and they also sound very nice.
