I got a set of eBay HID's. They are 7" Euro beam and 55 Watts.

I have taken off the lightbar and put the new lights on. I'll do a test tonight hopefully to see how they compare to the lightbar. Roughly the same wattage. I have done the wiring so I can swap them over easily. The real hassle is undoing and doing up the nuts...

I figure for my July western Queensland trip, the HID's will be better suited.

Cheers

Interesting, previously you nearly had me convinced to not install the HID's I got for mine, and go with the lightbar.
Now you've gone the other way

One day when I can find the time (and motivation), I'll finally wire my HID's up, then I may still look at a lightbar for the front of my pack rack.

By the way, think you need to make some space in your garage looks a bit tight!

What is the point of an empty garage?

The light bar is good for lots of light up close - say high country tracks. The HID's have a greater range down the road - say, outback touring.

I'd like to be able to compare the cheap HID's and lightbars with the expensive ones and see if there is a real difference.

I also bought a Pioneer platform roof rack from Rhino-Rack. That thing is almost impossible to put on and take off on your own without a pulley system off the garage ceiling. The old steel roof basket just slid up onto a pair of cross bars. This thing has to be placed perfectly onto four small feet. And the wind noise at 100 km/h is really bad! But when towing the Crossover, it is much quieter.

Cheers

I hang my platform on a Thule pulley setup I modified . It was originally for a rooftop box .I just extended the centre bar & put cheap cabineers on the end of the ropes. Used to pull my old rack up with cam lock straps over the rafters .I'm to broken to slide my rack on any more.

I have set up a similar pulley system in the garage. I made two bridle straps with snap hooks on both ends. They hook onto the four eye bolts I have on the rack. The bridles go through the ring on a swivel which is attached to the bottom pulley. Two twin pulleys and a length of light rope finish it off.

Pain to have to need it, but there is no way I can put the rack on solo and SWMBO would be no help at all.

Cheers

I might have to do something like that, will need to go exploring for ceiling joists to screw into.

Fortunately, mine re exposed so it was easy. The trick is making it go up evenly and flat.
