If you are cutting, then the first thing you do should be masking everything off, & covering in plastic. Same as if you are spray painting inside the car.

Only difference is how painful & damaging the 'overspray' is.

Default steering wheel

I would drill a small hole say 3mm bit down the collar parallel with the steering shaft then run a 4 mm so as to just skim the shaft.
plenty of penetrating oil and a bearing puller.

Way less mess and less chance of damaging more stuff

If you skim the shaft it won't effect putting the wheel back on

I would view this as a good opportunity to fit the 99-02 grand cherokee steering wheel, way much better looking wheel.

You can use a 03-04 wheel but you have to use a 99-02 airbag, One wire as opposed to two.

Also i think you need to change the resistors( different value) for the cruise control buttons if you have that feature.

Hi guys,

thanks heaps for all of your input. In the end I ended up going with what jaffazoom suggested. I had to sacrifice the clock spring which is cool as it was broken anyways and I had picked up another one ($19) from the wreckers when I went out to get a "new" steering wheel. I would not have been able to attach the bearing puller with the clock spring in place.

The donor vehicle for the steering wheel ended up being a 1996 ZJ. The airbag and horn connectors are identical to the XJ. This one also had cruise control but in my car the buttons are obviously not connected to anything. Looks cool though

I have to say that this is a much much better steering wheel. Feels waay better in the hand(s) compared to that rather skinny XJ steering wheel. Well it worked out good in the end. Got a better steering wheel and fixed the airbag light by replacing the clock spring
