I'm looking at a set of rims for my jkur and was wonder if anyone has tired to cover 17x10 with 3.5in back spacing? I think I might be dreaming abit here. also I think I might have legal issues with track width for stupid qld rules

mate I have 17x10 with 4.25 (most in oz seem to run at a minimum, 4.5) back spacing, running 315 70 17 rubber and I stick out of even the already wider double black offroad flat fenders.

stock fenders on 3.5 back spacing... a good few inches outside the guards, sorry. I get why you would want to, there are some sweet rims (read: beadlocks ) that come in 3.5 only, most of the 40inch club in the states run 3.5 to help clear the massive tyres

ps, track width would be the issue above and beyond tyre coverage, you can in some states get around the track width limit if you are replacing with a new axle assembly that has a wider track from factory (pro rock 60's, rock jock 60's etc.)

we can dream right....

Today I decided to refit them for the summer season and I noticed that all of them have fine cracks particularly around the base of the treads but also in the carcass

I reckon that I'll get this summer season out of them before they have to be replaced I don't wheel particularly hard, just around the High Country which I've been frequenting now for over 30 years. I've never had a set of tyres fall apart so quickly, they're worse than a few retreads that I ran on my Cruiser for a couple of years when I was poor. I'll just keep them on the Jeep now until they are dead which won't be too long as I reckon I'm going to tear off complete tread blocks next time out.

I have contemplated taking them back to Bob Jane and having a bit of a winge but I don't like my chances being so far out of warranty.
Grahame, to me that looks a lot like chipping from stones being thrown off the front tyres into the rear. Unsually at speed.
Each time you fit the bighorns are you rotating them front to rear?

Ive done a heap of outback touring/driving, and found exactly that wear on various tyres. MT MTZ's were probably the worst for it due to the open tread design.
I found a few things helped.... longer front mudflaps, and slowing down on open desert roads (ie Oodnadatta, Strzelecki Tks etc)

Towing a camper trailer exascerbated the issue due to increased load on the rears, heat, and in turn softer rubber.

OMFG, what am i doing in the JK section????

Yep they look just like my maxxis after a similar mileage, in some places even bigger chunks have separated on mine. I have clocked up about 15k and about 5 weekends worth of wheeling and run at pressures similar to those you mention. I did go to rotate them at about 6k but they had all worn and chipped in the same way so didn't bother. Good grip but won't be getting them again

oh yes, thanks for that.

I think I might save up and have a second set of wheels for off roading! I sometime wish I lived in America... can get away with almost any mod...

You may be right about the chipping. I don't really rotate them when I fit them, I just keep the rights separate from the lefts. They get semi-rotated front to rear more by accident than by intention. Whilst this may explain the chipping it doesn't explain the cracking. It's a bit chickens and eggs ... is the chipping being caused by the cracks, or vice versa?

If you'll recall some time back you pulled me out of Fenceline during which I popped a bead. It turned out that the sidewall got staked and I had to chuck that tyre. I managed to get a second hand one for my spare that had just enough meat left on it for it to be legal. It is smooth and evenly worn with no cracks (probably all highway miles) and was made in 2007.

I've often thought of mudflaps on the front, mainly to keep the mud and dirt off the doors. I might look into it more seriously now.

Oh, and you're in the JK section because you're secretly a JK stalker wannabe

I'd be interested to know where yours were made. As I said in my last post my 2007 spare is in far better condition than my late 2009 ones. I just went and had a look at them and the spare is made in Taiwan but the others are made in Thailand. Might be that the Thai ones are to be avoided? Regardless, like you, I'll be giving them a miss in future.
