I'm wondering a similar thing I have a 2.5" lift plus larger tyres, do I need an engineers certificate or just proof it was done pre-August 09.
You already need a engineers cert under the old rules anyway.

the other very serious concern is that overnight a hell of a lot of cars in NSW will be without insurance! Why, we all know how when you need them they go through your claim with a fine tooth comb to see where they can get out of paying, well these changes just opened a whole can of worms of loop holes for insurance companies

If your insurer knows about the mods, they will have a choice to insure your car or not. If it is on the record that you have the various mods already, it should not void your insurance - but worth checking with your insurer if you are not sure.

If an accident was caused because of a mod that you had, e.g. sway bar removal causing excessive body roll resulting in a roll over (hypothetical example) then your insurer may not pay the claim.

I think the key with the new laws will be how rigorous the RTA are at enforcing them, and whether there is a specfic group of vehicles they are targeting e.g. those with massive lift, and those in ful sic Gemini's with a spring chop that puts the car on the bump stops.

The key to responding these issues to make a difference, is for the collective voice to be heard. Is anyone aware of a response by the 4WD Association?

Check of the 4wd Association website - there is a bit happening there.
I just hope there's a class action for companies in this mess cause whilst it's one thing to shatter my personal build plans (eg new tyres about to land next week - now illegal), but it's another to screw with our businesses. It's a sad fact - jobs WILL be lost because of this.

Default 4wd assoc some information

Hi All,
Thanks for the comments on the issue and particularly to Roger Sheath for jumping into the fray so quickly when the announcement was made and for keeping you informed.
As of today we have spoken to
- the NRMA,
- Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA)
- The Australian National 4WD Council (Rob Kelly)
None of the above organisations were made aware of the proposed announcement beforehand. The NRMA, the State's largest motoring organisation, was not even informed of the proposed "lifting" restrictions or consulted about any of the changes announced. The lack of process and consultation is unbelieveably bad.
What is happening now?
1) We are in the process of mounting a united response to have the restrictions over turned involving the National Council, the NRMA, and the AAAA. Rob Kelly is also contacting other Association (eg Caravan & Campers).
2) We are drafting a joint press release with the above organisations. I hope to have this released today to the press and on our website.
3) We have contacted
- Channel 10 (they first enquired about our views) and proposed involvement of the above organisations in a program slot dealing with the issue.
- 2GB to request radio time
4) We are getting the details of the AAAA testing done on lifted vehicles. We believe the results were very favourable to our case.
This is a very frustrating experience, time consuming, and so unnecessary, and I believe does nothing for the cause of road safety.
We will keep you posted on developments but in the meantime I encourage you as undividuals PLUS as Clubs to write to the Minister, write to your own State MP, and to the NRMA about these changes, about the classification as "hoons" and the lack of a satisfactory process, consultation, and statistical evidence supporting these changes.
We will also write to the Minister but will progress these other avenues first. We have not yet got political, ie, gone to the Opposition, as we will try to work with this Government. However, that is a course open to us if necessary.
I think it is important that we fight this and get some sense into the processes that determine these types of announcements.
Regards
Greg Redfern
