Default Replace axle seal kit without a press

2004 WG CDR. Dana 44 diff.
Removing them is a no brainer but i'm looking for suggestions for installing the bearing and collar without a press and without foobarring the lot.

I don't have a freezer big enough to house axles so that's not an option.

anything else ? waking it in with a pipe ?

also what sort of oil to top up the diff do i need? anything i can get on the SCA shelf?

Most bearing supplies will do it for you for a minimal charge

I use a one-metre length of DN40 seamless schedule 40 pipe as a slide hammer. I have done it four times now, successfully. No - I am not replacing the same bearings over again. Twice on my original axle (each side) then again on my new varilock rear end.

My procedure:
  • Sit a mini-sledge on the garage floor
  • Place the centre of the axle on the head (keeps the studs off the concrete)
  • Slide the inner race down, then drive it home with the pipe. You will hear it when it gets all the way.
  • Place the outer race on.
  • Slide the keeper down and hammer it into place.
  • Swear because you forgot to put the axle retainer plate and seal on first!

I did my WJ front diff bearings by throwing the whole shooting match in the Engel on freeze overnight, then chucking the bearings under the heat gun for a while, the suckers slipped straight on with a little love tap from a piece of pipe that was ready and small sledgy.
I say, give it a crack mate.

Heat the bearing up nice and hot with a heat gun then just drop it straight on. Some steel pipe just to tap it home is all it should need.

Make sure you reassemble it in the right order though. From member the plate and seal need to go on before the bearing. Don't want to get the bearing on then realise you forgot the mounting plate lol.

Steel.

To be specific, seamless - either ASTM A53-B, ASTM A106 or API-5L Grade B. Pipe dimensions to ASME B36.10. (Yeah, sorry, I do this stuff for work!)

I got mine from eBay, actually: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181318197313
