If the EGR valve hasn't been cleaned/decarbonised in a while it might look like this:

Cheers

I don't even think XJ's have a EGR now ....?
But there is the Emission Control Canister Purge Solenoid this is so confusing ...But can effect the fuel Air Ratio....
and is controlled by the PCM which probably fried it when it died Getting Closer I might get one and try it

Emission Control Canister Purge Solenoid
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Canister Purge Solenoid

•Rough idle. One of the first symptoms that a faulty canister purge valve may produce is a rough idle. ...
•Difficulty starting. Another symptom commonly associated with a bad canister purge solenoid is difficult starting. ...
•Check Engine Light comes on. A defective canister purge solenoid may also set off the Check Engine Light.

Usually, a bad purge solenoid will display any of the following 5 symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential problem in need of servicing.

•Rough Idle. ...
•Poor Engine Performance. ...
•Difficulty Starting. ...
•Check Engine Light Comes On. ...
•Low Fuel Economy.

If your canister purge valve is stuck open, however, it creates a vacuum leak that can affect your engine adversely. Simply put, air will be allowed to enter the engine in a quantity that is not predicted by your car’s computer. This will change the car’s air to fuel ratio, and can cause rough idling (car feels rough and bouncy when the engine is running), as well as difficulty starting. If experienced in tandem, there is a high likelihood of a failing canister valve, or some other part of the EVAP system.

The more I google I think this might be the issue
I think when the PCM committed suicide it tried to take a few of its servants with it to the after life ... Back to waiting on rockauto & FedEx

I cant work out what item is the one you are changing?

imo, an OBD2 reader would help you a lot, if I understand correct,
ur relying upon the key jig?

my old corded one works, but the new bluetooth one doesnt
(on my 2 early 96)

an old style obd2 reader should be like $5 on ebay ?
