Default Auto or Manual? - That is the question....

howdy ya'll

the poor old YJ looks like it'll be up for an engine and gearbox swap over sooner then I first planned.

now, I'm going to put a 4.0l 6cyl in, but upon talking to the man, Wooders, there is a couple of ways I can go.

1. take a motor and driveline from an XJ or

2. take a motor and driveline from a TJ.

now, here's my dilemma. If I go an XJ driveline I get the 4sp auto, if I go a TJ driveline I get the 5sp manual. but i dont think i will be able to decide what transmission i want!

i like driving manual's but i also know that auto's perform alot better offroad....

so here's a poll, auto or manual. let me know what you think.

I love the feeling of a direct mechanical conection between the engine and the tyres, gives a great feel as to what the vehicle is doing, you can pick exactly how much throttle input to give a certain amount of power to the wheels which you can hear from the revs. I would choose a manual for 99% of the total driving I do. BUT, and its a big BUT, the more harcore the terain, the more I appreciate an auto. Control over brake and throttle at the same time, being able to load up the torque converter, no clutch to abuse and much more control. So it depends on what compromise you decide to make.

Auto's out preform manuals in all but one aspect of 4wd'ing.
The down hill decent.

I read in 4wd monthly that the auto in the 3.0ltr nissan patrol could be placed in reverse while traveling forward in downhill decents and the accelerator used to pick up the slack in the torque converter to slow forward motion for short periods of time.

I wonder if anyone on here knows if the Jeep auto is capable of doing the same.

festa 1 - forgot 1 big one - fuel economy
And if you have anti stall that makes a manual pretty hot to drive off road
ALL tj's and JK's have it - the rubi has electonic adjustment

Hmmm anti stall in a JK? I'm going to have to go back to Jeep and ask them to put the "anti" in to go with my stall.

Man pedal all the way!
