I crossed the simmo last year, was just me and the Mrs.
Was a bit late in the season being October.
It was quite chewed up going west to east. I definitely used 4wd, in fact without a transcooler i would advise to put the vehicle in low range. i had the trans temp light come on twice by leaving the car in high range.
I used 17L x 100 JKU CRD auto. 34's (not re-geared), Bars all round, fairly well loaded as we were also moving house (Perth to Sydney)
Most of the gear is over rated, carry water (lots just in case), I also carried 2 x 20L Jerry cans and still only just made it to Birdsville, Id carry 3 if i did it again.
I crossed in a day and a half, one of the most boring trips iv ever done to be honest. Its a rough shitty track, then for miles on each side is corrugations. Gotta do it to say you have done it though.
As for the suspension, i had to add an extra 2" of lift in the rear just to get a inch and a half of space between the bump stops.
Anyway you get the idea, everyone is pretty much on the same page.
Not sure on the 2wd stuff but if you say so comes to mind. I know i got stuck a few times.
