Default Ironhide got grumpy and wouldn't start.

This weekend I had an interesting shutdown.

We had been driving to a local rally to watch the car and on our way back we decided to go up Mt archer to overlook Rockhampton etc as the sun sets.

The XJ had been running great all day, no issues whatsoever, until we got to the lookout over Rocky. I parked up and we got out, I left it idling while we watched the sunset.

When we got back in I put it in gear and it stopped?? I tried to start it up and it was turning over no problem but it just wouldn't fire up. After checking under to bonnet and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary I admitted defeat and called the RACQ out.

40mins waiting and when the guy turned up he checked the fluids and battery (All ok, which I knew as I already checked them about 4 times) he got in and the bloody jeep started first time. Not so much as a cough or splutter!!

I have no idea why it would do that. I suspect that he was grumpy as we had been discussing getting rid of him as it just not the right size for us as my girls are growing up and the back seating isn't really comfortable for long trips...Ah well I will just have to keep an eye out to see if it happens again!

Crankshaft position sensor by any chance? My XJ started doing this to me years ago - sometimes start, sometimes not, crank all day long, then after a while would suddenly just work. Did the key code reading and got nothing but after the 20th time it had done it, I finally got a CPS code. Bought, installed, never a problem since.

Best I can offer sorry, good luck mate.

I was thinking it might be something along those lines.

Guess it might be a good time to replace all the sensors and shit that generally goes wrong.....but then again maybe not as i'm not sure I'll be keeping him....

Well, no need to replace anything beyond what's wrong! Have you cycled your key/ignition and checked the codes yet? That'd be the first place I'd start. I actually took mine to some auto electrics and they apparently got no codes from it, yet when I did the key-turn code read trick, hey presto CPS code. That's the very first thing I'd do obviously.

Crank sensors are, what, $100 or so? Not TOO big a deal. At the very least if you think you'll sell him off, you're going to have to replace that sensor anyway... A dud sensor can knock a lot more than $100 off your sale price if you try and sell it unfixed!

One thing at a time really.
