Check out my Ride(s)
Talking JK Diff Gears

I’ve read a good 20 or more threads but am
Just as confused as I previously was.

I have a 2010 3.8 manual with 3.2 diff gears. Running 305 70 17 so roughly 34” tyres. Previously on 33s if it stalled out on a steep hill even in L4 I’d have to ride the clutch big time to get it going. I don’t do a great deal of 4wd, beaches, and around farms mostly. I’d like to and obviously have to regear. Currently reading 15+L/100 but it’s more than that in reality.

Obviously I need R and P for both diffs. But what else? I really don’t need lockers and very unlikely I would bother at all however I believe I may need a new carrier for the from but not the rear?

Mostly I’m after better all round drivability so anything would be an improvement over 3.2.

So 3.7, 4.1 4.5? And what additional parts will I require and do they vary for any of those ratios? Don’t really want to drop thousands on it and will be doing the work myself (with some assistance) so require parts only.

Cheers.

I've got 4.10 in my 2007 JKU 2.8 CRD manual with 315/70/17 's
Stalled out on a steep slippy bank on an off road site once (in 4L) ... quickly pushed it into 1st from 2nd let the clutch out turned the key it started no problem and got me to the top OK (phew !)

There is probably more torque available on the CRD to your 3.8 petrol !
I find the 4.10 with my 34.25 " diameter tyres runs just nice

Get 4.10's, you'll be geared like the Rubicon's which drive nice on 35's. If you want the gears to be a little more lower (easier take off, better towing, lower crawl speed offroad) than get 4.56's.

Have a play around with this calc to have a better idea of how it will drive: http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Don't forget to order diff rebuild kits (new bearings etc) for both diffs.

I can't remember if it was the front or rear that would need a different carrier, but the shop/website that you are buying from will be able to help you.

If you're in WA, SBR Offroad are a great shop to deal with and have very competitive pricing on what you need and fitting.
