Default Looking to buy XJ Diesel

Gday everyone,

Years ago I had a TJ wrangler.. Loved it but unfortunately due to an expanding family I had to sell it.. Well after a few years I've got the Jeep itch again.. However this time looking at a Cherokee so I can load the family up and get amongst it.

I've found a 1999 model one locally with 200,000 on the clock.. I've never had a diesel before so just wondering what I should look out for. I understand that its an old vehicle with plenty of kms under her belt but my understanding is that Diesels will run for forever if properly maintained.

When I go and inspect the car what areas should I be focussing on?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

have a read through this thread

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...=96380&page=15

does it have a good service history?? 200k is nothing its just getting worn in,
check for oil leaks around the turbo, intercooler pipes, and rear main (not a fun job to do).
if the intercooler pipes are factory rubber pipes check them over for any possible holes, lots of oil on them would be a good sign of needing replacement.
make sure the coolant looks well maintained, if its mud brown then I would probably avoid it.

ask if its had any over heating issues, has it been overheated before or if its had any head work done.

take it for a good drive and see where the temp gauge sits, try and see if it blows a lot of smoke.

people will probably try and talk you out of a diesel but I have had mine for 11yrs and don't think I could ever part with it the fuel consumption can be pretty good mine it running about 10l/100k on 33's and stock gearing, some parts are expensive but that's with any car,
there is plenty of alternative parts out there, check out this thread

I disagree with this statement.
small diesels are no longer lasting than a petrol equivalent motor.
the million mile motors are 16+ litre motors designed to max rpm in the 1500-2100range. And Ive seen my fair share of million mile motors and rebuilt a few too.
Biggest problem with diesels is over heated motors = ring change every time
