Default Roof rack 2 door

Hey people long time lurker first time poster,

Just wondering what people's opinion's are on roof rack for the 2 door JK. I am trying to decide if I should get an external permanent rack i.e the gobi or go for an occasional use camping trailer? Anyone have a rack on long term that has had an impact to their vehicle?

Cheers

I have a 3.8 jkur with three vortex bar rhino rack fuel consumption goes from 11.3/100 to about 11.9 with just the bars about 12.4 with kayak carriers 13 with a side awning and about 14 with the spec ski on top. Back to 11.3 with all removed

It depends a bit on how often and what you need to use it for, if you use your vehicle as a dd as well and how many k's. I'm also assuming you intend a Roof Top Tent if you go the rack?

IMO for camping I'd go the trailer you keep the vehicles CoG low, still have a lightweight capable rig for exploring once camp is set up (that you dont with a roof top tent) don't have the ongoing fuel use that happens when you leave a rack on.

Also you will get more life from stock and aftermarket light duty long travel suspensions with a reasonable ball weight and carting the major weight of your camp setup on the trailers axle rather than in your vehicle.

If you want to carry long stuff, big surfboards, SUP's or big kayaks/canoes, or tow a boat, and don't mind being "committed" in a vehicle centric camp the roof rack could get you by.

I chose to use a box trailer to carry camping gear etc.....I didn't want to increase the height on the JK (underground carpark at work).

I gave up trying to fit into underground car parks in mine as mine's at the 2m height limit.

I'm just at the limit of fitting into my own garage. It's so tight, I can just fit in with the max trax on the Rhino Racks however I tried tying them down the other day with ratchet straps and couldn't fit so I've gone back to securing them with luggage straps.

I also have a fishing rod holder bolted to the other side of the Rhino racks however I can't have the rods in them and fit into the garage at the same time.
