Best practice head unit wiring
I already run an aftermarket HU but I'm swapping it over to another one. As luck has it the new units wiring colors are identical to the one that's in there so that bit should be really straightforward.
I do this stuff out of town so want to make sure I have everything before I get started. In my little electronics projects at home I'd make these connections by twisting the wire, soldering, and heat shrink. Is there a better method I should use, and is there anything to look out for? I've never done this kind of install before.

That method will never give you any trouble. I've never been a big fan of crimping even though it's quick and easy.

You could get a pin socket so it can be unpluged. If you want to be super pro. I just twist and tape on radios. I've only had one Commodore catch fire once with my method

I'm with Rango. It's so much neater and easier to buy the correct pin socket for the head unit.
However if you do go down the solder route the method you suggest is correct.
Just try not to over heat the joint with a too hot solder iron. It should look shiny, if it's dull than the solder was too hot and it will be a high resistance joint and brittle.
Lay an old towel or something underneath where you are soldering if doing it in the car. Dropped solder will melt your interior.
