Legalities being one, technically your not supposed to fit them on a rim that width. Well def on the the early 16" rims its not technically wide enough. Some say they rub but I've had 285s for years now on stock rims with no issues!

Stock 16 and 285 is a good combination. Absolutely no rubbing with a slight lift. Less chance of tyre coming off the bead.

Fellas what's your thoughts then on 265/70/17 tyres on stock 17×7.5" wheels with no lift?

NOT TRUE.. most (if not all) 285/70/17's are 100% legal to fit to a 7.5" rim as shown on their websites..
EDIT - as are 285/75/16's..

285 75 16 km2 is not appropriate for a 16 inch stock rim according to bfg USA website. I believe the rim is 7 inch, recommends 7.5.
