The road from the Wyndham turn off north to El Questro/Home Valley is not as good as the southern section. Its narrows (1 lane each way) gets winder and has lots of small shaily rock. This didn't bother us, but my uncle went through after the grade last year and ripped one of his new quality tires as the graded rock was sharp. We kept the tires around 30psi and had no problems with either the road surface or staying at speed.

We (the wife) chose to miss home valley and head straight to el questro. EQ was nice with friendly staff, green campgrounds and great amenities. Camp fees are good and get better the longer you stay ie $20 per adult per night (kids free) $20 per adult for a 7 day EQ wilderness pass. So logically if you stay longer you get better value. But make sure your equiped as EQ is expensive if your not prepared. We were running low on fuel (1 jerry left) and supplies. Fuel was $2 p/l ulp and a litre of long life milk was $4.50. this annoyed us as its approximately 90km from kunanurra. Happy to pay this went in the middle of the gibb (ie mt Barnet) but EQ is basically black top from Kunnuna so the prices IMO should be less (happy for them to make money off me but i thought it was overpriced)

Should say the is a nice little water crossing just as you enter the EQ township

Just south of El Questro is the mighty Pentacost River. Had a great time driving it and the kids loved it.

And yes we may have driven it more than once

We also stayed at lake argyle on the way back to darwin.

It was very nice and staying in a cabin was a good but expensive idea. It cost us $300 for the basic cabin for one night. And since then i have teased my wife that i was going to buy her an argyle diamond, but as the cabin was so expensive she misses out

Notwithstanding cost, lake argyle staff were super friendly and helpful and the infinity pool both cold and cool. The cabin was very nice with a great view but basic. Also fuel (ulp) was $1.99

Also dont just hang out at the pool. Find the track at the backnof the pool that takes you down to the lake itself. You can swim and fish in the lake. I jumped in and it was warmer than the pool

Ps the lake is amazing

So we eventually got back to darwin. But after a few days we had itchy feet so we headed out to kakadu for a few days.

We lived in kakadu (jabiru) in 2001. It was great to get back out (in our vehicle) and show our kids around.

Unfortunately for me no barra, but i did pick up a nice Saratoga and sleepy cod.

We camped at the sandy creek campground which is just south of the 3 bridges (norlangi creek -spelling). We were planning to camp near cahills crossing, but got the word that it was infested with mosquito's. Well holly crap the mosquito's were on steroids were we stayed so cahills would have killed us. We even set our dinner timing to be in the camper before they came out and ate in the camper most nights.

You need to get a parks pass (kids under 16 free), and camp fees ranged from $5 -$10 per adult depending on if you want showers ans flushing toilets

There is also a beautiful billabong next to the campground. Obviously dont go swimming and be careful around the waters edge, but you can fish there and put in a boat at the ramp

Looks like an awesome trip and adventure. Wow!

I'm hoping to do it in a couple of years, now at the stage of getting the Jeep ready.

Silly question but can one pull up in a quiet, desolated spot and pitch up there for the night? Say the camp spots are full.
