sorry steve , think that not so good,,,, for 1 the air flow at any sort of speed will still not go through the cooler ... it will go over or around .... even with the fans .... apart from rock crawlin .... here's somethin to mull over... a radiator fan is absolutly useless to you after 40 kph.... and the radiator is sitting vertical ...not almost horizontal..... yeh ya might get some extra pull at low speed but any thing over 30kmh the air will flow past it not through it ... a bit like trying to use a cheese grater upside down..... you'll gain in rock crawlin cause of the fans but you'll cook it on the road because you've basically taken away the flow through cooling effect of the air at speed...the only way you will cool it at that angle is if the air is ducted onto the cooler at a minimum 70 degree angle....

My Tranny temps have been acceptable because I don't do much offroad work. Around stop start areas is where the temps start to rise. If I was to do some offroad work or sand driving, I would definately be putting in a fan.. Cheap insurance...

i just thought of something (in hindsight). it would have been valuable info to know what temps an average stock wrig was running BEFORE doing any mods! anyone willing? nice to know if any of our ideas are an improvement or not. the '96 factory manual states the normal operating temp is 50-80 degrees celsius (of course that will be a bit higher here in Oz and perfectly normal). but actual figures would be nice before modding anything.

ideally, id like to see temps from an average XJ (say 170k-250K on the clock) with minor to moderate mods running both the factory cooler/rad heat exchanger and the dealer installed towbar cooler fitted. of course any combo will help set a benchmark to overcome

I'll put mine forward.. On a straight road sitting on 110kph, with the Torque converter locked up, your looking at 70 deg. Around town, stop/start with the TC not locked up, between 90 and 100. This is with ambient temps around 40 degs. I try to drive around town in 3rd gear as the TC will lockup earlier, keeping the oil slippage to a minimum and thus cooler. My temp sensor is on the output side of the cooler lines.
