Makes you wonder if all the gizzmo's just create complications. The original ('40's / 50's) Jeeps and Land Rovers had nothing more than tough suspension and good ground clearance. Their rock climbing and desert trekking feats were amazing!

It is a frustrating vehicle in many ways.....makes plenty of power and torque, it's just that the computer makes sure you get very little of it most of the time. Once mine is out of warranty, I'll be interested in a ECU tune that for the most part turns off all the shit and puts the driver back in control.

The old 80's series cruiser with a million miles on it certainly didn't have any issues on any of the tracks like i did with nothing more than a saggy 2 inch lift.
At one stage we noticed it was losing coolant through a cracked heater tap, bypassed it by joining the hoses with a 12mm deep socket and it was away again. The jeep would have shutdown and blazed warning chimes at me before getting towed away in a similar situation.

If it didn't tow my van so well i would think about replacing it but i guess i might just resign myself to mainly beach trips where it excels instead of rutted hilly tracks. I wonder if there are any jeep techs that can explain why it shuts down in that situation, it wouldnt be so bad if it just cut the power back but once it stalls it can be quite dangerous to control the car before getting it restarted

I’m yet to give Byfield a run it’s only 2 hrs up the road from me. Out of interest we’re you in 4Low at the time it stalled on you?? I have never needed low range so far in the sand and haven’t had the engine stall, I wonder if it only happens in low range when the wheels are spinning hard??

Could it be the trans heating up and the ECU giving in due to it's parameters?
My mates FJ Cruiser has done a smiliar thing, not stalled, but disengaged everything when the trans got hot in some soft sand.

Is there any of the modes that prevent this behavior ? Trying to decide on my next vehicle and weighing up between one of these or the older WH or a 200 LC.

While i mostly do road work i do have a holiday house up a messy road at times and can be deeply rutted and muddy or covered in Ice so cutting out would be bad.
