Default 2008 JK Wrangler - Manual gearbox on the way out

Hi all, long time no post.

I live in country WA and I have a 2008 2dr 6 speed manual JK. She's done just over 140 000kms. Over the last few months I've noticed a steadily increasing drone/grinding coming from my transmission. It occurs in everything but 5th.

I took it to my mechanic on Monday for a diagnosis and he said the bearings are gone and it's on the way out and in need of a full rebuild or replacement. The transmission oil was apparently clean. It's still drive-able but obviously I'm being very gentle with it.

I'm not the most mechanically minded person but I'm trying to learn. I was wondering if anyone had some advice on what I should do? Is it better to go with a rebuild or source a replacement gearbox? What am I looking at price wise? I'm thinking the $3k to $4k mark?

Cheers

Out of interest how many times has the gear box oil been changed ?
Got a 6 spd myself on 148,000KM's so one more thing to get paranoid on
Have read that you can get rebuild kits for these, but someone with more knowledge than myself will hopefully chip in.

It should at least be checked at your major service intervals. More if you're towing something regularly.

I spoke to a gearbox specialist yesterday and he said it's probably the input and laydown shafts that are gone, as 5th being quiet is due to it being 1:1.

Does anyone know of any gearbox exchange services in Australia? At this point I'm probably just going to buy one that's already been done.

every 50,000 kilometers

and its a fussy beast when it comes to oil, use only Mopar oil that meets MS9224 part number 04874464

the OP's bearings are probably starting to pack up, possibly caused by being in too high a gear when towing. load is what kills bearings rather than speed

Well mines never been subjected to towing (paranoia now at low lower level)
Oils been changed with the Mopar at 50K, 100K then twice again at approximately 24K intervals. Its cheap enough and easy to do.
Local dealers got a shelf of the stuff covered in dust as no one asks for it.
The Mopar stuff appears to be quite thin and alcohol based.
Splashed some on the drive when l changed it last and it evaporated without a mark being left.

OP din't state that the JK had been used for towing ......... !

I said "possibly" been used for towing

is yous starting to play up RLT?

I've been rebuilding gearboxes and all things mechanical as my paying job since 1972, so have a bit of an idea, but am still learning and still would not consider myself an expert.

the Mopar stuff on the dealer shelves is a synthetic oil and probably doesnt move much as it expensive and for TJ wranglers the owner manual says the nsg 6 speed gearbox is sealed for life and the oil never needs changing, which of course is bs. later models have a change out interval specified.

there are other suitable oils like redline, and a lot more that are not. I only used the mopar stuff as price wise comparable to redline and have a TJ with high mileage

as I said, overloading usually stuffs gearboxes bearings, often caused by towing in too high a gear, or sitting at a certain speed in too high a gear when it should be shifted down a notch, wrong oil or water in oil

All good education. 6 spd box OK (fingers crossed) and is given plenty of mechanical sympathy and fresh oil so if it goes its not my fault
How many KM's would you expect to get out of a manual that's been looked after, before issues arise ?
Use Mopar ATF in the transfer case also & been changed every 48K
Redline in the diffs
I guess I should stop reading these 'problem pages' but ......
Every new rattle / noise and the imagination kicks in.
Have started to get a very faint whistle when the turbo kicks in going up steep hills, so that may be a future issue on the horizon
JKU done 148,000 km's
