Hi Shane.
That oil will be fine. Very black oil is normal. The oil is doing its job by holding soot in suspension. I may have opted for 5w/40 if i was towing or experiencing extreme heat like you guys do.

Only way to tell if oil is holding up is to have it analysed. When i was working, the company had an account with an oil supplier that offered this service. Only issue i ever had was a high soot level on one analysis.

One of the cheapest places to get the oil here in UK is the mercedes dealer, believe it or not. They sell a 20 litre container called a lube cube. Much cheaper than any of the well known brand oil.

That's interesting, might look into that also. I heard MB dropped their prices on parts substantially a few years ago. Anything for the motor I'll be looking at MB alternatives.

What's a good online site for parts in Europe/UK?

I buy a lot of parts through rockauto in the US but of course it's LHD.

I have for years pondered on the logic of using 5W-30 oil in my WH CRD in Australia.

Lets face it, the engine is Mercedes Benz and it can get very cold in Europe and the U.S. the intended mass market for the GC. Has anybody experienced minus 30 degrees C temperatures recently?

I found this chart at https://www.machinerylubrication.com...ose-engine-oil

In summer my garage temperature is regularly +40C. Would that not mean that a 40 weight oil is more desirable, and a 5W oil unnecessary?
I have sometimes used the same Penrite HPR 5 Engine Oil 5W-40 as Clarky. The engine did not explode.

Opinions?

It does seem that a lot of the oil recommendations are aimed at colder climates than Australia. After a bit of research on the subject I have opted for Penrite !0w 40 for both my WG 2.7 and WH 3.0 crd. Didnt Jeep change their oil from 5w 30 to 5w 40 for the WK crd due to some engine failures in the USA ?? Anyhow towing a big van in Au in summer with a motor thats done 350,000km needs something better than 30 oil in my opinion. It may even be better to go higher than 40 under these conditions? One of my relations works for William Adams ( who service Caterpillar ) and they use 15w 40 in most stuff. I know we are talking different engines but they are operating in hot conditions at high power levels so may be 40 is the go.??

Finally got to changing the oil today.

No idea what was in it before but it's noticeably quieter with Edge in it

Wouldn't it be more important to consider the quality of the oil rather than the grade?

For example the 5.7 Hemi. Apparently if you run anything other than a 20 weight in this engine you're going to have problems, regardless of climate. The engine is designed for a 20 weight oil.

Likewise the 3.0 CRD recommendation is for a 5W30 oil (I did read something about Jeep recommending a 40 weight but pretty sure this is confused with the WK2 in the US which is our WK here, which are known for big end bearing problems).

Years ago there was an article getting around from a mag I can't remember testing several popular oils at the time. Royal Purple was using it for promotion a lot as their oil came out on top. But what not many picked up on
was that Castrol Edge was almost as good, and a long way ahead of all the others. And Royal Purple costs a bomb. Castrol Edge 5W30 A3/B4 can regularly be had on special for less than $40 for 5lts.

Hence why all my cars including my racecar have run Castrol Edge for the last 10 years

But anyway I'll see how it goes with the CRD over the coming months. The test will be towing the racecar come summer

Numerous times I have talked to Penrite about oil recommened oils etc on various Jeep models. They take the oil specifications from the manufacture in
nearly all cases. The tech toid me years ago that 5w30 in the 2010 WH diesel was to thin for Aust conditions even more so when towing. So I have used
Penrite 5w40 Enviro has a DPF ,since vehicle was new ,now 222000 klms. These Merc motorsare known for blowby,so a Provent is a must.I also run the same oil in my2012 GC Overland diesel.
Re the hemi.I also have 2015 Jeep SRT, which has the 6.4 Gen 3 hemi exactly
the same as the 5.7 from years 2010 on.both motors are known for ongoing lifter failures from 60000 ks up.Both have different grade oil requirements!Suffice to say a couple of months ago due to thousands of premature lifter failures in the US a class action has now been instigated against Stellantis FCA .I might add around the same time a class action for lifter failure in the GM LS 1 motors also instigated .! Numerous theories abound re why failures happening from engine design, hydraulic lifters not suitable for performance engines,to less zinc in oils ,the jury is still out!
