Looking at replacing my WJ 4.L and wondering about WG CDR or V8, this is for towing our van mostly.

Fuel consumption would be the biggest difference between the two, especially towing.

I've loved my 4.7 WJ, towing has been great with it on the occasions I've had to, however the fuel consumption can be horrendous, so crd for the win I reckon

The 2.7 CRD will need frequent TLC. As an owner, it's a love-hate relationship. It performs very well. It has never stuck me up, but it often throws MIL errors that need little fixes.

If you can DIY, go the CRD. It's a very solid platform overall and performs as well as most modern diesel 4X4's.

If you have to take it to a mechanic for repairs, it will send you broke. You will struggle to find a mechanic who will touch it, other than dealers. Even some Jeep specialists won't touch the WG CRD.

Bottom line, knowing what I know now, I'd go with the CRD again. (I'm a DIY'er. I bought it for the relaxation of getting greasy. It's been a success on that front!)

I've had both, the CRD was better in every way except for its hideous repair bills when shit goes wrong (injector seals, injectors, turbo, crank/cam position sensors and torque converter).
My current WJ is an 05 4.7 overland it has been completely reliable for 40k kms minus a waterpunp leak, so the overall cost is less in my case for the v8, and it sounds lovely but I would replace it with another CRD if I could.

Drove from Adelaide to Tintinara, just over 2hrs, used 1/2 as much fuel as the 4.0L. has a bit of a pull to the left and fan has stopped working.
