Default How to fix paint chipping

These days, I rarely take my car to the local dogwash or car lovers for a high pressure wash unless I have come back from a trail covered in mud.

I am looking at patching up a few chips. I have the original car paint, and the largest chip measures around 20mm x 10mm. It is almost rectangular, near the bonnet opening. I suspect it is where mechanics have been leaning. The rest of the chips are along the gutters. What is the best way to patch these up? Do I need to put a primer on the bare metal or will the paint be able to stick to and remain on the metal?

I have also noticed that the engine bay has lost its colour and gone dull. Is there any way to get the whole area resprayed/repainted without emptying the bay (resto territory)? I noticed that this happened almost overnight after a degrease. It is as if the mechanic used a paint stripper.

Presumably your vehicle is Clear-over-base 2pac, like most ?..what color?

(my white ones seem to be solid white)

in any case, its virtually essential to properly prepare the area for painting, which can be done in several approaches, but you need to prepare & prime bare shiny metal, fill any low spots & topcoat, sanding in between.

Blending a clear over base is tricky, but can be done, even using spray cans from Supercheap

its also possible to use a tiny paintbrush, and sand, for small chips

depends on how fancy you want to be, the original paint codes in 2pac, and 2pac clear can be bought from a paint supplier, and applied at home, then wet-rubbed

Thanks for the advice.

I am kind of lucky because my pre-update colour is PW7. The brightest white available.

Coincidentally, so is my 2016 JKU.

My panel beater tended to some of the previous chips while he repaired a crack in the front pax door hinge and all he did was lightly paint over the bare metal chips, particularly above the front grille. They were much smaller than the 20 x 10 bare metal gap I have at the moment.

heaps of stuff on Youtube about repairing paint

if you have white, I would get Supercheap (or someone else, if you want 2pac) to mix up a spray can ($35). prime over bare metal & spray filler, feather & rub back

should be virtually indetectable

I have this to do on the nose panel (near the bonnet)

There is also 2 small patches of rust on the rear upper corners
These will require more thorough work.
