Just prior to buying my 2014 jeep grand cherokee diesel the dealer did an oil service using Castrol Edge Proffesional oe 5-30w .
I assume that oil is ok for the diesel?

The correct oil is a 5w 40 synthetic brand suitable for DPF filters. There was an urgent world wide Chrysler TSB 18.078.16 issued by FCA about 4 years ago to all Jeep dealers to remove 5w30 immediately from all WK2 vehicles in stock .Probably because of a number of engine failures .All customer vehicles to be serviced with 5w 40 from then on.I would go to the dealer and ask him to change it asap.5w30 is not correct.Even more so if you are towing.

Totally agree with bjm, you should be using 5W40 synthetic.

ok, im now confused !!
i went to the Jeep dealers here and thought id buy some Mopar oil which they use for the next oil change and low and behold its a 5-30 oil.
Surely they wouldnt be using a 5-30 oil if Chrysler has issued a bulletin saying not to??

went and changed the oil i got from the jeep dealer to a Devlac 5w-40 BUT the service guys pointed out that the service bulletin re oil change viscosity from 30w to 40w related only to 2016 models made on or before certain dates, thus does not relate to other years.
Why only those 2016 cars with 3 litre eco diesels im not sure but there you have it.
The wording in the bulletin is unusual but does specify 2016 engines only.

I think there are two TSB’s about 5w-40. There is a later one that refers just to 2016 vehicles (Jeeps and Rams) so maybe they looked at that, and not the earlier TSB?
