RHD Alternator Brackets in a LHD?

Hi, I'm in the US and would like to relocate my alternator to the RHD position, which is currently occupied by my AC compressor. I will eliminate the AC system to do this, as I never use it anyway.

The below diagram is from a 1999. I'd like to make the change to the three XJs I own, years '89, '91 and '96.

Anyone have info as to whether the parts shown (#s 8 and 14 in the diagram) will fit my vehicles? Any other parts needed?

Hey ElMartillo.

That would be a good mod and i can't see why it would not work. I think all the threaded holes to accept the bracketry would be there. Jeep would not go to all the trouble to build two different 6 cylinder engine castings just to accept alternator brackets.

I have the 95 RHD model with the auto adjusting alternator bracketry. I bought the 96 RHD bracketry so that i could fit a larger 136A alternator. It all fitted up easily and i just had to play around with belt length to get it all to work. I got my 136A alternator from Summit in USA and it was made for the U.S Grand Cherokee from around 1998. Check out my build thread as it has lots of pics and the stuff i used to make it work.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at all three of my XJs, the AC compressor bracket bolts to the block just like the RHD lower alt bracket. The only hitch may be that the current bracket for the AC compressor also supports the fan clutch. Is that the case with your alt bracket? The lower one?

Hi, here is some of the info i posted up on my build thread.

The bottom bracket on the RHD 1996 and newer XJ's has two idler pulleys on it. It does not support a fan clutch.....



Pic below is my 1995 90A alternator with brackets on the left, and new 136A alternator on right with 1996 RHD brackets, pulleys etc. You can see that there is no way a bigger alternator fits in the old brackets. In fact the new alternator was touching the timing cover and was still a mile away from fitting...

Part 8 is going to make you shake your head when you see how it interferes with getting at the spark plug!
I took to it with the die grinder and opened it up a little.
I do recall needing a shorter belt after removing the AC pump.
There is just enough contact of belt to the fan pulley to make it work.
Heaps better to work on with the AC totally removed, better air flow over the radiator etc.

they must have changed things in '96

in my late '96, nothing needed removal

in my early '96, had to move things out of the way

both have A/C
