Default CRD Timing belt investigation

Just purchased a 2007 wrangler CRD.

Bought from a dealer who does not have service history from previous owner.

Has done 115000 km so in theory timing belt is due. Happy to do it if required but trying to check if it is already been done.

I had a look at the belt from top cover area, can't really tell if it is work or not but it is a Gates belt (see photo).

So question is, what brand of belt do they come with from factory, is it like a mopar or gates or something else. This can indicate if it has been charged or not I guess.

Are there any other tell tail signs if the belt has been changed?

Thanks
Kim

Mine is 08. Both the factory and replacement belts had VM and Gates logos. The factory one was made in Germany, the replacement one in the UK.
Coincidently I had to replace it @ 103K coz was fixing front crank seal that leaked due to new cheaper oil that was newer emission standard with more aggressive chemicals in it. Lesson learnt hard way & back to the old oil. I planned to replace it @ 140-150K as per VM service manual.
The state of the old belt was near new, similar to your photo, waste to replace but it's good for another 150K.
Check it for cracks and crimps inspecting all the length. With a small torch under the top cover you can peek at the condition of nearby teeth.

If i doubt change it....... there are far to many VM engine F'ups caused by timing belts failing well under 100000km. IMHO 80,000KM is a safe change interval.

I have just seen one that's now stripped a timing belt twice ...... due to simple neglect - you'd think he'd have learned... but no some people don't even lean by continually F'ing up.

That belt looks new to me, white paint of branding would have worn off in 5 or 10 thousands k's.

That said, you have know idea if the tensioner or water pump was changed. I would change the lot for piece of mind personally.

Thanks all. I think I'll replace to play it safe. I'll source from midnightmods.

Remove the lower bolts from the timing case and inspect the teeth .
Does the water pump look replaced? It can be seen from the passenger side of the bay. Also the can cap seal on the exhaust side. How does it look?
Too me it looks replaced. If you want to replace the water pump. You can buy a timing belt too and if once removed you don't want to change it and just the pump. You can return the belt.
