Default yet another tyre carrier fab.

here is the tyre carrier i've made. Like Steve F i used a slam shut latch and sub axle (thanx for the idea steve)

I also made a replacement bumper which doubles as a towbar.

There are really 2 stages to this carrier. ONe for around town where the tyre sits nice and close to the tailgate, and 2 where you can bolt on 2 jerry can holders for camping.

Here is a rear shot with the jerry cans on

and from another angle

open

no tyre now

and now with no jerry can holders on

There you go

Nice work, good idea having two stage set up.

However, is the tow hook really needed? As it looks like it decreases your departure angle, I'd simply use the tow hitch receiver as the tow point. Just my 2 cents

Not a good idea to use the hitch as a recovery point. The centre of a TJ tow bar is unsupported in any way and it can bend readily under snatching loads.
Better to recover from points at the chassis rail ends. Far less stress loads at those points.

Noice lookin' rear carrier....

Fairy nuff, and point taken. I've never had a problem with my bar but then again it depends on how well it's manufactured . To me the recovery hook in those pics looks as though it is mounted to a separate piece of box, which has been welded to the lower tube X member in between the chassis rails, not to the chassis rail???

Simply saying that I have seen a H@#$%n R##se Hitch bar bent like banana post snatch effort.
Better to locate the recovery points directly in line with the chassis ends to better take the load.

How would that tow bar go for compliance just in case of a disaster occurring whilst towing?
