O'yeah one word of advise, don't throw anything out no matter how bad it looks

Someone else maybe looking for it in any condition and that might help them with their rebuild....We have a group of guys all building MB/GPW's and CJ's so we share parts around when we can. Its amazing what I've been able to rebuild or make a new replacement using an old part as a pattern when I couldn't get NOS. The American aftermarket suppliers have been very helpful when I couldn't get it locally.

Good luck,

AL

Default Thanks.

Thanks Al. Your rig sounds like it's going to be tuff az. Do you have pics or a link to your build thread?

I have kept everything that has been taken off her except for perished rubber. As the build goes, parts that are being replaced or aren't needed will be put up on this forum with pictures to see who would like to purchase them etc.

As for this build, it's all the wife's call as it was her dad's jeep and is being restored/built in his memory. He was a larger than life character and apparently had big plans for the old girl so she wants this rig to be completely different to what people might expect. It will be a Sunday driver but she also would like it to be entered in car shows. So some of the plan is as follows;
1. she's picked out a turn-key crate motor. which is a 350chev engine to replace the donk that was in there which was a blown up 253 V8 which we sold off to a keen Holden enthusiast. Just looking for an engineer to discuss road worthiness/rego issues and also what reinforcement the chassis may need.
2. The leaf springs will go and it will be coil sprung all round.
3. She wants to keep it as a manual so a HD clutch will be needed and will need the appropriate adaptor kit etc sorted aswell. Might head to Mark's adaptors for this.
4. The dash, floors and seats will also all be custom made with their family's surname worked in.
5. I wanted truck stacks put on for the exhausts however my wife's taste differ's and she's keen to have the exhaust run out just in front of the back wheels to each side
6. We think the wheels are original but have some rust and damage so am going to look into having these repaired and restored to their original glory.
7. She wants a nice custom spray job with some airbrushing to signify the memory of her dad.

So that's the rough plan. Later today i will put up a full description of how this all came about, how we plan to tackle it and how novice we are at this kind of stuff! Stay tuned

Okay, so i have plenty of progress pics of the tear down to come and when the actual rebuild begins i will be posting photo's and video's accordingly however there will be money and time constraints given baby # 2 is on the way and the mrs and i both work full time! We welcome all comments and suggestions and advice. We are still making inquiries for a decent fabricator and engineer on the North side of Brisbane so if you have any suggestions that would be great. Anyways, here's the story of this Jeep and the build.

Roughly 7 years ago a father who was estranged from his only daughter found her and reunited with her. Unfortunately it was short lived as about 1 year later he passed away suddenly. His daughter was my girlfriend at the time (now my wife). Several weeks after his passing a cousin of my wife told her that her dad used to flog around an old Jeep and that he had in fact ridden in it and had fond memories of it. He also mentioned that he found out that her dad still had the Jeep but it was no longer running and that one of the locals had claimed it and was planning to get it running and sell it off to get some cash. This cousin suggested my wife claim the vehicle as it was really the only thing her dad actually owned after living life in his final years as a bit of a Vagabond. So off we set with my 84 diesel Lux and a car trailer to go and rightfully claim the old girl! After an 18hr return trip the Jeep was at our place. The photo's i've uploaded of the Jeep in my earlier posts are of when we picked it up and when we got it back to our house. Now being only in our early 20's we had other priorities such as our wedding and work...and partying.. so the Jeep sat under our carport for several years. One day i finally decided to start stripping it down and was finding .22 caliber rifle shell's all through it which was interesting. It sounds strange but it made us chuckle imagining what he was doing in the old girl! Sinking tinnies and shooting rabbits i imagine. Unfortunately not long after we started this my wife was diagnosed with Leukemia so the Jeep was pushed to the wayside while more important issues were addressed. Upon my wife's recovery we decided on a lifestyle change and moved from Sydney to Brisbane! It is here that i finally got a double garage and upgraded some tools to really get stuck into the old girl!. So after about 6 year's of the Jeep being static we have finally been able to dedicate some time to strip her down and get her ready to be rebuilt from the ground up. I owned a Toyota Surf so gained a fair bit of experience continually fixing it and have always had an interest in cars and four wheel drives. My wife on the other hand is learning as she goes and although she hasn't always been interested in cars but is motivated by the love for her dad and a fast learner.

Being the type of vehicle the old girl is, removing panels was easy and straight forward. We have kept every single nut and bolt and put them in labelled bags so we know roughly where they go and ones that are rusted or bent can easily be matched up for replacement. We have kept virtually everything that has been taken off the old girl. We kept the leather top and doors in storage and just recently i pulled them out and worked on cleaning up the leather which is still in really good condition. I will need to speak with an upholsterer to get the rubber inserts fixed and the clear plastic for the windows replaced as it's gone yellow and scuffed. I have recently removed all of the brake calipers which were disc rotor all round - if anyone knows if that was standard for this model that would be great. The front calipers were also Bendix which was news to me. The shockies were TJM but are completely had it and one of them even had a bash puncture in it. The bonnet, windscreen, front quarter panels and roll bar are all in good condition, all straight and minimal or no rust. The tub however has both floor pans rusted and one of the rear wheel wells has been torn out by what looks like an impact from underneath! I pulled off the hubs which had nice milky/dirty grease inside them however i need a hub socket to remove the rest of them and the front rotors. Still to take off are the leaf springs and diffs. After this has been done i will find an engineer to figure out how the coil towers will be installed and what suspension set up we will run with and also check if the chassis needs to be strengthened for the new engine. Once this has been checked and done i'll send it off to get the chassis sand and soda blasted then powder coated. I'll find a specialist to talk to about the diffs and what needs to be done to them. From there we'll address the suspension install then the brakes and rotors that are going to be used. After this is done we'll look at getting the rims repaired and restored. This is about as far we've planned for at this stage as we're divided as to what should be tackled next? The way we see it is this;
1. Install diffs
2. Tackle brake lines and brake system, Steering components and steering system then buy a wiring kit for all electrical components
3. Gearbox, adaptors,drive lines
4. get the floor pan and other body parts sorted out which would consist of cutting out rust and repairing damaged parts of the tub and then get everything sand blasted and primed and then get the respray when the build is nearer to completion
5. Mock it all up to iron any kinks and if parts need to be changed or modified

This is obviously a simplistic view but i've found it's better to look at it like this so as not to be overwhelmed. We are planning to alot $10,000 a year over 5 years for this project.

WoW...... this is an awesome and very special build. So sounds like it's going to be given the love the old Five deserves.

I'll PM you as it won't be to hard for us to catch up being almost neighbors.

Talk soon,

Al
