All this BS reminds me of the window tint regs in NSW. Most new cars come with window tinting on the rear passenger windows back which is equivalent to about 20% in the glass itself - darker than the 35% all round state limit (excluding windscreen of course). Apparently cars have been failing their first pink slip.

Has to do with ADRs and compliance for new (and used) cars being different from the state regulations.

What was legel when the vehicle was first registered is still legal today, that is why old cars don't require airbags etc, as long as the vehicle meets the requirements of the time it was first registered that is all that counts.
Of course some idiot behind a desk can certainly make life difficult just to give them a sense of power....

I believe this is our problem.

In regards to your first comment there Jj, "what was legal when the vehicle was first registered is still legal today", well no, apparently not in this instance. I looked in the inspectors "RTA Bible". It has NO mention of years or models, just that ALL cars fitted with airbags MUST have a dash light that lights when ignition on and goes out after a 3 second period. Apparently some test procedure for the airbag.
They're bloody nongs. But you can't blame the mechanic. If the RTA do an audit on him and your vehicle is singled out and fails because of a stupid light, it's his arse that gets reamed.

The whole bloody affair is a farce!!!!

On a side note, Does anybody know when airbags became mandatory?

cheers

My point is that these vehicles have been legally registered for up to 17yrs, they cannot change the rules, if the above were true then they wouldn't have been able to get registered in the first place as no airbag equiped pre-update Xj can comply with this...

Yep, I understand Jj. This was my argument but the mech just kept pointing to his book. The book said there was a light, so, there IS a light. I told him I would pull it all out in his driveway and show him, thats when he did his na na and passed it to get rid of me.

The problem is the legislation is missing just one word, which the knobs dont realise is required. It should say all vehicles equipped with ELECTRONIC air bags must have... etc

Its simply not possible for a purely mechanical device to have a status indicator lamp!

It will need an act of parliament to make the amendment so somebody needs to write to their local member to make them aware of the error. Seems odd that only Jeeps have the mechanical airbag, surely other makes have the same problem.
