Default Head Lamp issue 96 XJ 4.0

My XJ has developed another gremlin...

In the Head Lamps now...

My head lamps will without warning go out taking the dashboard lamps with it, can also just lose the main driving lights, so down to park lights only and dashboard lights.

Then... if I wiggle the relay board, the one with the turn signal relay on it, the lamps will come back on.

I’m 99% sure it’s got nothing to do with the head lamp switch.

I have modified the driving lamps with two relays in there to increase the voltage to the lamps. However because the dash board lights go out I’m 99% sure the issues not there.

Oh yeah no codes present...
Any thoughts ?

I dunno it sounds like a bad earth? I would of jumped in and said the headlight switch just replaced mine on the 96 it went silly lights but no dash lights then all work then none work except if you flashed then high beam and light bar worked?
Horrible job changing the light switch on a 96 you got to pull the dash apart
keep us informed of what you find?

I replaced my switch after the lights kept going out when I high beamed them (LED light bar).

Ultimately the behavior returned and I got an ARB after market loom.

Lights have been good since then. Brighter than ever.

I’ve found over the years with my TJ that the 4.0l gets so hot under the bonnets many of the wires go hard and crack. I’ve replaced many wires. Sounds to me like yours could be a bad wire.

With many a thread, it would be nice to know what eventually happened or how it was fixed (or not). No closure is the worst..
