I had not thought of that until you posted it. While washing the dishes a few minutes ago and thinking about it, perhaps see if you can get an replacement engine harness from the wreckers along with the replacement ECU? Surely replacing the engine harness has to be easier than pulling the engine out? I would expect an engine harness from the wreckers would not be all that expensive because I cannot imagine too many getting sold.

Good thought. Just sent out half a dozen emails to wreckers. Bosch say they can't do anything, so the repair option is looking unlikely.

QLD wrecker wants a grand for an ECU. Hopefully someone down here has something.

The misses is pushing to just scrap the car and get something else. My first Jeep was a bit of a pain, and she's not a fan of this second one either. She never understood my love of the WG.

Try reaching out to Adrian D. He might be able to help.

So, a local wrecker got back to me and had what I needed for 300 bucks. Even threw in a free TCU.

Buzzed out the harness looking for,

Ground - all pins
Power - all pins
0v - all pins
Switched power - all pin

No faults found.

Did find another crappy terminal strip jammed under the ECU with wires going from one of the ECU pins, through a power diode, and into the cabin. No idea what it is for but tapped it up properly just in case it was earthing out under there.

Hooked up the SKIM and taped the key to it.

Powered it up and all looked good. Saved the ECU file out of it and flashed my file to it.

Started it up and it ran fine. Left it for five minutes and gave it the occasional rev. Stopped it, started it and idled for a bit, all good.

Then......

Left the key taped to the SKIM and tucked it up out of the way. Cleaned up and came back for a drive. Started the car and 10 seconds later it shutdown with SKIM flashing. Stuffed around with the key and SKIM, but still the same thing.

I don't want to install the SKIM and barrel properly as then my key wont work with the doors. I have read places where people just leave the key taped to the SKIM and have no trouble.

Using WJDiagPro, there is a Transponder Communications Failure. It is re-settable, but comes back next start attempt.

There is an option to reset the SKIM "Reset Module This function will reset module. It does not reset stored keys.". Guessing I will give that a go next.

Any early suggestions?

Just read that if the SKIM module is not properly installed it can get comms failures. Might swap the SKIM and barrel over tomorrow to see if that helps.

Oh, and the SKIM module reset seemed to do nothing.

If you can find the passcode for the new SKIM, you could:
  1. Install the new SKIM
  2. Keep the old barrel
  3. Get new key blanks cut to the old key
  4. Programme them to the new SKIM with Diag Pro.

I have done a new key myself. It was not hard or expensive. I ordered it from a locksmith using the key number and programmed it myself.
EDIT:
I got my key from here: https://www.ebay.com.au/str/keysremotesbrisbane
Specifically, this key: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/221482642488
I sent them the key number, which I extracted from my local Jeep dealer. The dealer gave me both the key number and the passcode for the SKIM. In your case you need the key number from your existing car and the SKIM passcode from the donor car. You might find the donor VIN in the new ECU for the dealer to be able to help you.

The key cost me $37.50 in May 2020. The dealer was initially going to charge me $50, but in the end gave the numbers to me for free. I did have to send them my drivers licence and rego papers. I am not sure how that will work for the donor vehicle.

Ok, new lessen learnt. The bit where it says the SKIM needs to be properly installed on the barrel is spot on.

Once I realised how very easy it was to change the barrel, I figured I would get it done tonight.

Last fault has now gone, and just got back from a 40 k drive. Started and stopped it half a dozen times.

The Jeep lives again to let me down another day.

Thanks go to Adrian and JeanLuke for the support.
