hey mate if your talking about the nuts inside the chassis rail. i used a small plate of steel 1/2inch unc nuts and a piece of wire. drilled a hole in the piece of steel welded them together so i could push it through the chassis hole and line it up... bit of a pain really. i hope this explains it?? oh and the piece of steel hits the walls of the chassis and stops it spinning. my tj is a 99model as well...

The Savvy nutsert tool,
In the middle -the tool I made up to install the transfer skid mounts (still haven't used it ) I need to replace the spring washer with a decent lock washer.
And on the right, a couple of half inch nutserts for my '97. These aren't ribbed (let's not go there ) but apparently the ribbed ones are better (I said, let's not go there!)

This is the instructions that came with the Savvy nutsert tool

Here is a great write-up about the home-made tool from another forum. This write-up explains the tool far better than I could,
http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/nu...nstall-390635/

A few different nutsert tools you can buy - if you have the cash
The vids make it look so easy.
Only the last 2 on this page will handle a 12M or half inch nutsert - how's the prices!
http://dafra.com.au/

But as has been mentioned by others, there are plenty of other options to get the job done without using nutserts.

the tool you have made Wes looks alot like the tools i've been reading on other forums should work well!
with a lock washer as you said

There was a forum where a Mrblaine went into great detail on the tool he made... but basically identical to Wes's

Mrblaine = Savvy. He works with Gerald on Savvy products. I don't know, but I think they kind of own the business together.

Here is what the inside should do:

sparkin this back up

got another spinning has to be sorted this week....

I am thinking of getting a high grade bolt nut and washer from a fastners shop.

the getting the mig out welding the nut to the washer.
taking the old riv nut out of the frame and then tacking the new nut&washer to the frame so it does not spinn, then tightening...

Anyone see any probelms or complications with this???

Cheers Rhys

It would be very interesting to see how you go - if you proceed with welding nuts on..
I made my first attempt to re-do my nutcerts today - couldn't even drop the skid.

my skid moves easily 2-3mm by hand.. i'm not even driving it untill i get it sorted...
i will buy a bolt and try it on one of the stripped out nutserts and let you know how it goes... i suspect it will work well but will be next to impossible to line the bolts back up if you drop the skid again.... as the the bolts will only be able be lined up via the wire on the mig...

Just some rambling thoughts, sparked by Lifted TJs fix, I did this on the CJ a long time ago

Is there a larger oval hole further along on the side of the rail?
Find some place you can get inside the rail before you weld the nutplate.
Weld nut to top of square or rectangular washer or plate that fits inside rails.
Get some flexible but stiff wire put it up through the bolt hole and out the oval slot and wiggle the nut washer combo till it gets in the right spot.
Insert bolt from below to hold in place- finger tight
Drill holes from below through chassis at edge of square washer.
Rose weld to secure nut/washer in place.

Theres no close hole unless you make it.
Try using a chissel to create more friction between the skid & chassis.
Also try and soak with penitrating spray - especially from inside.

there is a 30mm oval hole about 40cm away from the trans mounts...

Definitely a good thought Gildo i will have to see what i come up with...

I was thinking of getting a huge washer and grinding it into a oval so it fits through that 30mm oval hole...
