Dave having driven with modifyed Prado's on some pretty serious tracks they are a more than capable 4 wheel drive. The FJ being built on a similar platform will be even better with a rear diff lock & possibly a 200kw engine. While a solid front axle is an advantage on extreme tracks, this vehicle will still handle B grade tracks straight off the showroom. Love or hate the looks it matters not as it's an attention seeking car just like a JK or Hummer. As 95% of most peoples driving is comuting to work or just getting to the bush it will be far better onroad with superor handling & comfort. Being a touch bigger with a higher payload will make it better for touring although you'd have to increase the piddly fuel tank.
Will be interesting to see what the final trim for Oz will be as the Yanks have several trail & performance options to choose from. If they build a diesel auto I will certainly have a closer look

I had a look at it at the Sydney Auto Show, not very impressive. As noted above it is an old design in the US and has had some problems. Not in the league of the JK regardless of what Toyota would have you believe. But, if all your interested in is a street cruiser or mall or Maccas poser then maybe its ok. They seem to think they will steal market share from Jeep, which just goes to show that Toyota doesn't understand Jeeps market segment.

Heard it straight from the horse's orifice that Toyota's primary target market in Oz is "under 40 metrosexuals". I guess that sums it up. Oh shyte! Maybe I'm thinking of the JK

basically, FJ is just a retro looking Prado. i do like the design frankly, however, those thing are very hard to park with the big turnning circle, also, vvti engine really cost a lot of petrol on highways. if u like the design, and just want a cool looking Prado to cruise in the city mostly, i think it will be fine. if i were u, i would wait for the new wrangler coming out, and trade for a new disign wrangler.
