Mac, some pumps are able to rebuild at little cost, basically a bearing and a vane pump cassette. Being alloy, I'm not sure how easy it is to rebuild but definitely easier before it dies completely!! I would however try a full flush and refill, but this would only delay the inevitable.
Don't discount the power of the Internet and claim the pump as a know issue and try the dealer for anreacement, the implied warranty only has to prove that the pumps life is expected to be waaaaaaay longer than 3 years ie the stat warranty!

I did a fair bit of googling last night and am now pretty confident that the problem will be with the pump. There was a few times when it was at full lock with plenty of revs up which I now know is a bad thing to do. I have at least learnt something out of this.

Next question, how do I flush the PS fluid?

I know the blokes down at the local auto transmission joint so they're going to flush it for me on Saturday. Fluid is cooked so we'll see if fresh fluid makes much improvement.

Meanwhile, Jeep want $425 for a new pump. For US$400 (=AUD !) you can get a PSC high-volume pump kit. Would still have to buy a cooler to go with it but it's almost cost neutral compared to factory.

Anyone tried the PSC kit or are there any other aftermarket suggestions? I'm never going to run anything bigger than a 33, but a higher-flow pump has got me thinking about a hydraulic winche in the future.

Have you tried pushing the dealer for a warranty replacement or even a very generous discount since its failed so close to warranty end?

Since the warranty is out you have nothing to loose!

It's six months out of warranty plus I'd have to pay to get them to even look at it and it's nearly an hour drive each way. About ready to write this off to experience and learning something I didn't know (don't hold the steering at full lock).
